＝Who could it be? It's you.

驚いたときに「if」を使ったこのような言い方をするようです。

●"Polishing the key-hole is what I should have said!"

鍵穴を覗いていたMrs. Brillは「ドアノブを磨いていた」と言い訳したけれど、ドアノブは汚いまま。それを見たMary Poppinsのセリフです。「（ドアノブではなくて、）鍵穴を磨いていたって言うわね、わたしなら」といったところでしょうか。I should have saidはIf I had been youというIf-clauseが隠れていると考えればいいですね。

＝(old-fashioned, BrE, informal) I feel sure（OALDより）

文末につけるセットフレーズだそうです。日本語では、「請合うよ、確かだ」など。

第五章のタイトル。「one」が一体何なのか、ワクワクのタイトルです。

●It's no pleasure to me to be going for a walk in this heat

in this heat＝hot outside

具合のよくないEllenですが、「こんなに熱っぽいのに」という意味であれば、heat ではなく、「fever」あるいは「temperature」が使われます。

●I'll buy you a pennorth of peppermints."

pennorth＝pennyworth、ちょっとだけ

peppermint＝ハッカ味のキャンディー。アクセントは最初の「e」の上。

●plop-plop

ドスン、ドスン。後にある、「Ellen's feet marched slowly and heavily along the Lane.」の擬態語。重い足取りを表現します。でも、「プロップ、プロップ」という音は音だけ聞くと、なんだか軽そうな足取りですよね。

＜P.123＞

●"I can see a rainbow through every chink of my hat," said Jane.

chink＝crack、割れ目、裂け目。

a rainbow＝麦わら帽の隙間から、陽の光が虹色にでも見えているのでしょうか。

obliged＝showing that you are grateful to somebody、感謝する

am＝stand、前章のTopsy-Turvyを思い出しますね。

Michaelのセリフ。

must＝そんなのわかるはずじゃん、というニュアンスでしょう。

P.116～P.121　Topsy-Turvyの最後まで。

＜P.116＞

scramble ＝move quickly especially with difficulty, using your body.

scramble to his feet＝よろよろと立ち上がる

with a great tossing of legsも英語的な表現ですね。足が宙を回っている様子が目に浮かびます。

●"What did you say your name was?" said Mr. Turvy, panting with excitement.

これは、Miss Tartletに向けた質問。P.112で、ポストマンがMr. Turvy宛ての郵便物を配達しに来たとき、彼女がポストマンに話したセリフ、"Give the letter to Topsy Tartlet."を指しています。Topsyで逆さまつながりな二人です。

＜P.117＞

●It would make up to me for so much.

make up＝compensate

make up ~ for bad thingsという形で使います。この場合、so much unhappiness と解釈すればよさそう。

they＝Second Mondays

treat＝something very pleasant and enjoyable

treatには他の意味もあります。This is my treat.といえば、「わたしのおごりよ」ですね。

●"Pick up your handkerchiefs, please --- and straighten your hats," she snapped.

handkerchiefとhatが複数形になっていることに注目！　JaneとMichael二人に対して、さあいくわよっ！と声をかけているんですね。ちなみに、handkerchiefの複数形は、handkerchievesもＯＫなようです。

●But Miss Tartlet herself came up to them, smiling radiantly and tossing her curls.

radiantly＝brightly、アクセントは最初のａ。

それまでは頭にお団子を載せていたMiss Tartlet、ひっくり返ってからというもの、髪型もカールのまま。本当に楽しそうですね。

●"Now, do. Mr. Turvy and I ---," ～--- won't we, Arthur?"

do＝come again

おやおや、Miss Tartletったら、Mr. Turvyのことを「Arthur」ですって。顔を赤くしながら呼んでいるところがかわいいですね。

●"we'll be in if we're not out --- I
