　人がひとりこの世からいなくなる……きっとそれは、その人をとりまくネットワークの一つひとつが崩れるということなのだろう。残された者はその崩れたネットワークを取り戻そうとあえぎ苦しむ人も出てくれば、そのネットワークから解放される人も出てくる。

その「いなくなった人」が何十年も連れ添った自分の伴侶であったら。その人には自分の知らない面があったらしい、と気づいたら……。突然夫を亡くした59歳の専業主婦敏子は、自分の心のバランスをとろうともがきながら、還暦を前に変わっていく。

強烈な女友だちの存在は、『OUT』と似ている。決して心を許しているわけではないけれど、なんとなく「親友」な仲間。それにしても、60歳を前にした女性たちがなんと生き生きとしていることか。作品中、「老人」と言葉が何回となく出てくるが、この言葉は、もはや年を重ねたことを意味するのではなくなっているのかもしれない。年が若くても、枯れた人は老人かもしれない。75を過ぎても、エネルギーを発している人を老人とは呼び難い。『魂萌え！』を読んでいると、登場人物たちの年齢が高いことをふと忘れてしまう。たぶん、きっと今のシニアのパワーを反映しているのだろう。

専業主婦の母は父がなくなってから、よくこう言い始めた――「パパが生きていた頃は、○○さんはそんな失礼な口のきき方をしなかった」。娘からすれば、気にしすぎだよ～、といって、すませたくなることだが、残された本人にとってはそんなに簡単な話ではないらしい。人というのは、一人ひとりは点なのかもしれないが、つながりあうことによって、もはや点ではなくなるのではないだろうか。父という自分のつながりの一部をなくしたことで、母は自分が生きる意味や自分の存在自体も問い直しているのかもしれない。

Mr. Justice Wargrave(W)とDr. Armstrong(A)の会話から。

W: 'Oh, you know, I wouldn't quite say that.'

A: Do you mean you know?'

Wargraveの'would'は、主張を和らげたいときに使うwould。婉曲・丁寧な感じを表すそうです。例文は以下の通り（ランダムハウスより）。

That would scarcely be fair.

それはフェアな振る舞いとはまず言えますまい

You would be surprised at the complexity of the directions.

指令の複雑さに驚くことでしょう

I'd say it's too late.

まず手遅れでしょうな

本当は結構この状態を楽しんでいるのだけれど、思ったことの反対のことしか言葉にならないので、「can't say」ということは考えられないでしょうか。う～ん、P.106でこの第二火曜日の珍事を「my misery」と呼んでいるので、矛盾してしまいますね。ちなみに、林容吉先生の翻訳では「わしは、とてもすきとはいえん」（岩波少年文庫『帰ってきたメアリー・ポピンズ』P.139）となっています。

wainscoting＝base board,　壁の下の方に沿って貼ってある木の板

主語＝a small mouse。倒置されています。creep out of a holeなのは、small mouseですね。

turn turtle＝turn over completely (while sailing)、ひっくり返る。もともと航海で使われていた言い回し。

make allowances＝ allow somebody to behave badly with a special reason、大目に見る

stumble＝trip, よたよたする、つまずく。逆さまになっているので、歩く（？）ときも足ではなく、頭を使って……。前置詞は「on」を使っています。

conceitedly＝having too much pride in yourself, うぬぼれて。アクセントは「ei」の上。

むべなるかな

　 「企業Webサイト制作現場の"非常識"」というコラムのシリーズを読んだ。「姉歯」はどの業界にもいる、というのが今回のテーマ。そうそう、その通り、と読み始めたら、「むべなるかな」という言葉に遭遇した。

　文脈から、「ありえる話だ、当然そうだろう」という意味ではと推測できるが、お恥ずかしい話、わたしのactive wordsには含まれておらず……。そんなわけで、広辞苑のお世話になった。

むべ→「うべ」に同じ。

うべ→名、もっともであること。なるほど。

　なお、動詞は「うべなう（諾う／宜う）」あるいは「うべなむ」。その意味は、「いかにももっともだと思って承知する」。「うべなうべな（宜な宜な）」で「もっともなことであるよ」だそうな。大変勉強になりました、ハイ。

選ばれた客にしか開かれない、緑のドア。そんなフロリダの高級ブティックで働くHelenが殺人事件に巻き込まれていく（自ら好んで？！）。にわか探偵Helenが、スマートとは程遠いものの、問題の糸口を見つける。フロリダの陽の光、ゴージャスな登場人物たち、その人たちが抱えるダークな世界。まさにおしゃれなエンターテイメントミステリーだ。ただし、Helenの性格と行動には若干矛盾を感じる――こういう感じ方をする人が、こんな行動をとるかな？　ちょっと無理があるんじゃない？、といった感じ。まっ、ご愛嬌。「drop」には「（傷ついて）倒れぬ、死ぬ」という意味もあるそうな。そうなると、タイトルは「死ぬまでショッピング」ということか。

サラ・ウォーターズの訳者中村有希さんが翻訳されるというので、翻訳本も楽しみである。
