6月20日のChristie

読了の予定でしたが、一段落分だけ残ってしまいました！　27日のお楽しみということで……。そんなわけで、最終日はこの本とAgatha Christie短編集『While the Light Last』から『The Edge』を読みます。女の狂気に震え上がってください。

P.312～P.316 A handkerchief lying on the floor will cause no comment whatever.まで。

and yet＝nevertheless、ではあるが、けれども。Armstrongも気がつこうと思えば、気がつけたはず、という意。

さぁ、読了間近！　犯人の告白を聞きましょう。再来週はChristieの短編を1編読み、７月からはオリエント急行のページを開きます。

P.307～P.312 中ほど、Nobody worried about me, they were all too deadly scared and terrified of each other.まで。

coping stone＝笠石。といってもよくわからない。たとえば、塀の一番上に置かれている瓦など。ここでは、a finish touchのこと。

＜P.308＞

●My medical adviser wrapped up the information very prettily,

wrap up＝まとめる／the information＝that another operation would be useless.／prettily＝うまい具合に。医師が「これ以上手術をしても無駄ですよ」とはっきり告げたわけではないことに注目。

●but I am accustomed to getting at the truth of a statement.

get at＝つかむ。普通の人なら、うまく言いくるめられると、医師の真意をつかめないかもしれないが自分は違う、人が言いたいことをしっかり理解できる、つまり、余命いくばくもないことがわかったという意。
