P.288～P.294 中ほどand as they looked through the glass they could clearly see the circle of painted horses, the brass poles and the dark blur that ever and again whirled across their sight for a moment and was gone.まで。次回で読了ですが、なんだか寂しい気がします。

遅くなりましたが、前回の復習です。P.277～P.282 下から２行目、Then Mary Poppins lifted the Twins from the　perambulator and put Barbara in front of Michael and John behind Jane. まで。

自分のこと。もうMiss Tartletではなく、Mrs. Turvyなのよ、と言っています。

＝Speech does not have value. Speech means nothing. 無駄口たたくな。次の"And a Cat can look at a King, I suppose?"は意味のないこと。

swinging-boatはこちら。　 Hoop-laはこちら。

shuffle＝walk slowly without lifting his feet completely／languidly＝moving slowly、どちらかというとけだるい感じ。

比較級の否定。最上級の意。

このセリフを聞けば、もう誰がやってきたのかわかるでしょう。海の言葉といえば、Admiral Boom。ちなみにこの「All hands to the pump.」は「困難にあたっては一致団結せよ」という意味。

trumpet＝通常は、音がよく通るようにするときに、手をラッパの形にする動作を指しますが、ここでは、のどの調子をよくしているのかな。

10月24日のMary Poppins

こんな時間になってしまいました……。前回はP.266～P.272 最終行 "There's a Merry-go-round in the Park!"まで。

＜P.266＞

●from the bough of the ash tree by the Park Gates came the clear double-noted call

主語は「the clear double-noted call」。倒置されていて、この後にどんな音なのか説明が続きます。／double note＝二全音符。つまり音が二つ聞こえる、ということでしょう。カッコーの鳴き声は３拍子なので、２拍子とするのはちょっと勇気がいります。

●Among the faint green smoke of buds

smoke＝a mass of small things

●The Ice Cream Man tingled his bell wildly

wildly＝extremely

●They drew up panting.

They drew up, panting.かな。ゼェゼェしながら止まったのであります。

her＝the Ark

●"Make way, there, please! Make way!"

make way＝allow us to pass

●Then it steadied itself and passed lightly up and over the topmost boughs.

steady itself＝stop itself from rocking、バランスが悪そうにゆらゆらしていたのが、ピタッと動きを止めたかと思ったら、す～っと上まであがっていく、そんな感じ。／bough＝a long branch of the tree

＜P.264＞

●The front door key scraped in the lock.

scrape＝make a unpleasant noise。ドアの鍵を開けるときの音のこと。

●Zap! ～　Crackle! ～

それぞれ擬音語。どんな行動をしたときに出た音なのかは、エクスクラメーションマークの後の文章をじっくり読んで……。

●"Jumping giraffes!" cried Mr. Banks, as he lathered his face,

jumping giraffes＝意味はなし、あまりにも興奮して口に出てきた言葉。特によく使われている表現というわけでもなさそうです。jumpとgiraffeというありえない組み合わせであることが重要。／lather＝cover his face with white small bubbles。もちろん髭剃りのため。

●"Ship ahoy!" roared Admiral Boom waving his muffler.

ship ahoy＝there is a ship in sight. ahoyは注意を喚起する言葉。おおい！この言葉からナビスコのChips Ahoy!を思い浮かべるのは私だけではないようです。

●but now the snow's gone I shan't have to!"

have toの後は……get Andrew and Wiloughby two pairs of leather boots each。

●they were glad she had not disgrace them.

disgrace＝make them feel ashamed

●keeping an eye open for customers.

keep an eye open for＝look for somebody

＜P.266＞

●Everything shone and glistened in the sunlight.

glisten＝特にsomething wetがshine

●the tender pale-green buds were bursting.

tender＝delicate。budsを修飾します。後述のfragile green shootsのfragileも同様にshootsを修飾。／burst＝break open

●fragile green shoots of aconites, snow-drops and scyllas were breaking into a border of yellow, white and blue.

aconites→yellow、snow-drops→white、scyllas→blue。言葉は、出て来る順番に対になっている、というのがルールです。／break into＝begin、～の状態になる。

●thrushes and tits and swallows and finches

thrush＝つぐみ、tit＝小鳥、swallow＝つばめ、finch＝フィンチ（すずめの仲間）

●baa-ing loudly.

baa＝羊の鳴き声。日本語ならメェェ～と表記するところ。
