On April 10, U.S. President D. Trump stated the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty is unfair, saying that "The U.S. defends Japan, but Japan doesn't need to defend us" and showd his displeasure.
He suggested that Japan's defense spending increase could be addressed in the future bilateral trade negotiations.
He said so to reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

The U.S.-Japan Security Treaty is the cornerstone of the bilateral relations, and stipulates not only the U.S.' obligation to defend Japan, but also Japan's obligation to provide bases to the U.S.
