On April 10, four classmates of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted by N. Korea at the age of 13, and so on planted cherry trees in the front yard of her alma mater, Niigata Municipal Yorii Junior High School, in hopes of her prompt return to Japan.
On this day 48 years ago, her father Shigeru (passed away in 2020 at the age of 87) took a photo of Megumi in front of the cherry tree at Yorii Junior High School.
The photo has been used in many occasions to pray for the resolution of the abduction issue.

Masaki Ikeda (60), head of the association of classmates pledging to reunite with Megumi Yokota, said that "I hope she will return as early as tomorrow."
Five cherry trees were donated to coincide with the Yokota family of five.
After the trees were planted, Megumi's mother, Sakie (89, lives in Kawasaki City), answered a phone call from Ikeda. She said that "I want to look at the cherry blossoms and say how glad we are that everyone has returned."
