【大雪山国立公園・旭岳情報】冬の姿

今日の写真と5日前に撮った写真を比べてみると季節が変わったようですね！上の方はもう冬のようです。
The above two photos were taken within 5 days of each other, but it's like they are a season apart. It is already winter-like up high.

【シラタマノキの実・Gaultheria Berries】

今朝も水たまりと姿見駅の前にある池には氷が張っていました。姿見展望台の付近には雪が積もっていますが、散策路では雪が全て解けました。散策路は雪解け水により泥があるため、トレッキングシューズなどのない方には長靴がオススメですが、歩行は問題ありません。
The surface of the puddles and ponds around Sugatami Station were frozen again this morning. There is still snow around Sugatami Pond, but the walking trails have completely melted and are free of snow. The meltwater has made them muddy, so wellington boots or hiking boots are recomended, but there are no issues walking around the trail.

しかし、姿見の池より標高621メートル高くて、距離2.8キロ離れている旭岳頂上まで行ってみると、状態の違いが大きいです。現在は冬登山です。
However if you head to the summit, only 621m above and 2.8km from Sugatami Pond, the conditions are completely different. It is winter mountaineering season up there.

姿見の池から少し登ったら、登山道に雪が積もっています。
There is snow on the trail just a little beyond Sugatami Pond.

登山道は6合目からほとんど埋まり、雪の上を歩く状態です。雪の状態は場所・時間・天気によって変わりますから、アイゼンとピッケルを携帯し、さらに冬登山の経験が大切です。
The trail is buried from the 6th station up and you will be walking on snow all the way. The conditions vary depending on location, time and weather. As well as carrying ice axe and crampons, previous winter mountaineering experience is important at this time of the year.

左の写真は踏んで固まったところで、右は踏み跡以外の雪です。今日、両方は解けましたが、今夜再び凍結によって、明日はガリガリかもしれません。そんな融解凍結サイクルは毎日だけではなく、気温・風や日照などの変化によって日中に凍結することもあります。朝、登りやすかった斜面は下りの時に硬くなる可能性があります。
The left hand photo is on the trodden and compacted trail and the right hand one shows the conditions if you step off the trail. Both had thawed slightly in the sun today, but are likely to refreeze overnight tonight. The melt-freeze cycle doesn't neccesarily take 24 hours, it can also happen during the day with changes in temperature, wind or sun. The soft slope you climbed in the morning could be refrozen solid when you come back down.

9号目の上は冬の感じですね。金庫岩と山頂の間は急なので、雪面が凍結のさいはアイゼンが必須と思います。
It feels especially wintery above the 9th station. The trail steepens between Kinko (Vault) Rock and the summit, crampons will be essential here when the surface is frozen.

山頂まで到着しました！気温は4°Cで、積雪約30センチありました。
The summit! It was about 4°C with roughly 30cm of snow cover.

現在冬ような旭岳を登りたい方は、アメリカの有名な登山家のエド・ベスターズが言ったことを覚えて欲しいと思います。
"Getting to the top is optional, getting down is mandatory"
「頂上まで登るのは任意だが、山から下るのは必須」と言うことですね。無理しないで、山を楽しんで下さい。

For anyone thinking of climbing Asahidake during winter, I'd like to leave you with a quote from a famous American mountaineer, Ed Viesturs; "Getting to the top is optional, getting down is mandatory". Don't be afraid to turn back if you find the conditions to be worse than expected.
