Holidays are what you live for.

Fight for Your Right to Partyは、人間は旧石器時代から祝祭を楽しんできたと述べます。
According to anthropologists, human festivities – probably going back to the Paleolithic era – featured the universal ingredients of feasting, dancing, costuming, masking and/or face painting, for days at a time. These things didn’t happen indoors, within the family circle, but around bonfires, in the streets or the “dancing grounds” of prehistoric civilizations. Holidays bonded whole communities together, not just families.

Few, if any, cultures have ignored the human imperative to celebrate.

From a modern, workaholic perspective, our partying ancestors were wasting precious time.

Work was something you did when you had to. Holidays were what you lived for.

Europe

In his speech at Regensburg, the Pope attempted to set out a European identity that is Christian by faith and Greek by philosophical reason. But Benedict’s speech implicitly suggested that he believes that Islam has no such relationship with reason – and thus is excluded from being European.
TIME, November 27, 2006. p. 29

Christian by faith and Greek by philosophical reasonなのかもしれませんね。

Bill of Rights

Without Him, No Bill of Rights
by Gordon S. Wood

If Madison is not actually the “father of the Constitution,” he was certainly the “father” of the Bill of Rights, which is what the first ten amendments to the Constitution were called.
NYR, November 30, 2006. p. 54.

The country then promptly forgot about the Bill of Rights until the twentieth century, when everything changed. In our own time the Bill of Rights has become even more important judicially than the Constitution itself.

Nature via nurture

Parallel Lives
by Frank J. Sulloway

Genetic influence is now known to account for between 80 and 90 percent of individual differences in height, which is why identical twins usually differ in stature by less than an inch. Similarly, genes are responsible for about 70 percent of individual differences in weight, about 60 percent of individual differences in general intelligence, and contribute less, but still substantial amounts of variance, to most behavioral traits. According to Segal and other twin researchers, as much as 50 percent of the variance in personality traits appears to be explained by genes, with somewhat smaller degrees of variance accounting for occupational interests (40 percent), social attitudes (30-40 percent), and job satisfaction.
NYR October 30, 2006. p. 39

[M]ost people, driven in part by their genetic blueprints, chart adaptive routes during their long voyages through life by creating their own environments – a phenomenon that has come to be known as “niche picking.”

In short, Galton’s old distinction between “nature and nurture” has been substantially replaced in recent years by a view of life as a continuous process of genetically influenced interactions with the environment – a process that encompasses what has been termed “nature via nurture.”
NYR October 30, 2006. p. 41
