Seventeen-year-old high school senior Josh Welch needed a costume for Culture Day, an event being held at Springbrook High School last week.

After scouring the internet, Welch decided he’d go to school formal dresses as a thief for culture day… Yes, a thief.

Why a thief, you ask?

Well, according to Welch, he “dressed like a thief for culture day because white people steal everyone’s culture.”

The tweet Welch posted has been quite popular, being re-tweeted more than 41,000 times and liked by more than 72,000.

Hundreds of people have also commented on the photo. Welch told Buzzfeed that he's received replies of people calling him a racist and berating the costume, but says most of the responses were positive.

“It far surpassed what little impact I thought it may have,” Welch told Buzzfeed. “I love it, spreading humor and awareness at the same time.”

Welch says he's a huge advocate for social justice, and "was excited to come to school and participate in some grassroots activism."
