After visiting Takasakiyama and the Umitamago aquarium on December 30th, we had to hurry and make our way to the African Safari in Ajimu (安心院) in Usa (宇佐市), which is to the north of Beppu. We had made reservations on the popular “jungle bus” at two o’clock, so we had to hurry, when we left the “Umitamago” at 12:30. Also I had to stop by an electronics store and buy another memory card for my camera, since I had filled it with over 350 pictures, which I had taken at the “Kijima Kogen”, Takasakiyama, and the “Umitamago”. We arrived about forty minutes before our “jungle bus” reservation. This turned out to be very good, because we realized we could have our picture taken with a tiger cub. I think this was the best part of the whole trip. Click on the thumbnails below to enlarge.

The older cubs
There were also two older cubs, but they were much bigger so they were kept behind glass. I have always loved tigers, and to actually be able to hold a cub was a special experience. I assumed that holding a cub would feel like holding a big cat, but it felt very different. I held the cub up by its chest. The chest felt very broad and muscular. Unlike when holding a cat which is very soft and thin. Also the paws were very broad.
Otis with a tiger cub
They were so cute. It cost only 500 yen to have one’s picture taken with a cub. I thought that Suna and all the kids would also want to have their picture taken, but Shaun was afraid and Suna and Otilia weren’t that interested. Whenever the cubs were held by somebody they seemed uncomfortable and the cub would twitch and move a lot. However when I held it, it was very calm, and at ease. I think it liked being held by my big hands. From the “jungle bus” I could also take really nice pictures of the cubs’ parents. I think the pictures below are of a male.
Such a beautiful animal
Our “jungle bus”
Since we went there by car, we could of course simply drive through the park ourselves. I had heard from people that if you visit the “African Safari”, that it’s best to take the “jungle bus”, because you can feed the animals. This turned out to be a great idea, but this made our visit expensive. The admissions fee was 2300 yen for an adult and 1300 yen for a child. On top of that we had to pay for the “jungle bus”, which cost 1000 yen per adult and 800 yen per child.
All the different feed for the animals
In the picture above you can see the different kinds of feed for the animals. The oranges were for the giraffes. The pieces of pork were for the lions. The green blocks were for the bison and barbary sheep. The brown blocks were for the black bears. As you can see in the pictures below, we could get really close to the animals and feed them. It was great Click on the thumbnails below to enlarge.

When feeding the lions, Shun would tease them by pulling the meat back into the bus again. This angered the lions and they would growl and bump the grate with their heads. This was really exciting.
Another “jungle bus”
When our “jungle bus” left the lion habitat, I could see another group’s “jungle bus” further along the trail, down by the giraffe habitat.

Feeding the bison
Feeding the giraffes was very amusing
Shun really enjoyed feeding the giraffes. We were told by the bus driver to not stick the food out of the truck, but rather keep it inside the truck near the grate, so that the giraffe will use its long tongue to take the food from us. As you can see in the pictures below, the giraffe stuck its tongue all the way through the grate and wrapped its tongue around the orange.
Feeding the giraffes
After we passed through the giraffe habitat we passed through the cheetah habitat. Unfortunately we couldn’t feed these animals. However I was able to get the nice picture below. I must say that all the pictures I took on this trip, turned out so good because I used my new single-lens-reflex camera.
The cheetahs
Finally we passed through the camel habitat.
Feeding the camels
After going through the park on the “jungle bus” we wanted to go through it again by our car. Another lap through the park wouldn’t have cost us anything since we had already paid the admissions fee. However at this point it was almost 4 o’clock and it was almost closing time. We still had some time left, but everybody was quite tired from all the activities we did on these two days. Just as the previous day we were very hungry, so again we ate at a buffet restaurant.

The drive from Ajimu in Oita to Fukuoka city wasn’t that long and we were back in less than two hours. When we returned we didn’t go straight home, but instead we drove directly to the “Aeon” shopping mall in Tokunaga (徳永), near Susenji (周船寺). The previous day, we had Korean Barbeque buffet in Beppu. At the Aeon shopping mall we again had dinner at a buffet restaurant called the “Carnival Buffet” (カーニバルブッフェ). After eating all we could eat, we were all full and very tired. At that point I thought that leaving the African Safari a little early wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Although we spent only two days in Oita in our winter holiday back in December, we had done many different things and it has taken me four months to write about all the different activities we had done. Recently when I write on my blog the entries become so long, and I have so many pictures to show. It’s hard to keep up. Below is a link to the website of the “African Safari” in Oita.

Suna and I have always enjoyed skiing. However since Shun was born 14 years ago we haven’t been able to ski until 2 years ago, when we all went skiing in Oita. Two years ago, at the end of 2009 our youngest son, Shaun turned five years old so we could finally all go skiing together. One year ago, at the end of 2010 we went to the “Geihoku Kokusai” ski resort in Hiroshima. This year everybody wanted to go skiing again but going on a two day ski trip with a family of six to Hiroshima is not cheap, so this time we decided to not go skiing, and instead we went on a two day trip to Beppu (別府) in Oita prefecture. We went to Beppu on December 29th and 30th to visit the “Kijima Kogen” amusement park・ “セントレジャー城島高原パーク”, Takasakiyama・“高崎山”, the Umitamago aquarium・“うみたまご”, and the “African Safari”・“アフリカンサファリ”.
Mt Yufu・“由布岳” (click to enlarge)
We left our house at seven o’clock on the morning of December 29th , but arrived in the town of Yufu (由布市) near Beppu earlier than I had expected. The town of Yufu is still often referred to as “Yufuin” (湯布院), however the name of the town was changed in 2005 when the town was merged with the neighboring towns of Hasama (挾間町) and Shonai (庄内町). The “Kijima Kogen” amusement park would open at 10 o’clock, so we spent about 50 minutes at a resting area at the foot of Mt. Yufu (由布岳), where the above were pictures taken. “Mt. Yufu” is a 1,583 meter high active volcano near Beppu, and is one of many active volcanos in Beppu.
The Omatsuri Ichibankan restaurant・“お祭り一番館”
After visiting the “Kijima Kogen” amusement park we had dinner at “Omatsuri Ichibankan” (“お祭り一番館”) in Beppu. At the “Omatsuri Ichibankan” restaurant we could eat as much Korean barbeque (焼肉) and other food as we wanted for a very reasonable price. We paid 1,880 yen for each two adults and Shun. Otilia, Otokar, and Shaun are of elementary school age so for them we paid only 980 yen each.
Korean barbeque at “Omatsuri Ichibankan”
Finally after stuffing ourselves full of Korean barbeque we went to the Kamenoi Hotel (“亀の井ホテル”) near Beppu station for the night. I was hoping to enjoy the hotel hot-spring which Oita is so famous for. However the children had no interest in using the hotel’s hot-spring, but instead both Otilia and Shun were really looking forward to playing poker. Playing poker, especially in the winter holiday has become somewhat of a tradition in my family. Unfortunately I have to say that spending the night at the Kamenoi Hotel was very uncomfortable. Even though it was very cold outside that night, it was very hot inside the hotel room, and although we told the staff they were very unaccommodating. There was no “off” switch on the heater, and the windows couldn’t be opened. As a result Shun and I woke up dehydrated and I had a headache. I will never stay at that hotel again.
