Tennis girls get fit (and rich) for fashion
January 15, 2006

AdvertisementInternational designers are clambering to dress the sport's most marketable players. Rachel Wells reports.

TIGHT pink shorts, colourful Lycra, bicep-baring tanks. Mardi gras, right? Wrong. We're talking about tennis — sexy tennis.

The game of fashion in tennis has come a long way since the days of white-collared polos and pleated skirts. And where better than Melbourne — fashion capital of Australia — for the stars of this year's Open to get their gear on in a battle of brands, off the court and on.

The on-court fashion stakes are so fiercely contested that adidas has enlisted London's Stella McCartney to design a collection of tennis apparel. The range will be launched in Melbourne this afternoon by 25th-ranked Russian tennis beauty Maria Kirilenko, who will wear the colourful collection of sexy tennis dresses, jumpsuits, tanks and shorts throughout the Australian Open and beyond.

Sporting apparel giants such as Reebok and adidas are investing record sums to develop high-fashion tennis clothes, paying millions in sponsorship dollars to dress the most marketable players.

Tennis apparel's transition from sports garb to fashion began in the '90s, about the time that Anna Kournikova lobbed on to the WTA circuit. The leggy Russian created more headlines for her looks and ensembles than her game. Despite a low world ranking, she boasted a $10 million sponsorship deal with adidas.

Nike pays the sport's newest glamour girl, Russian Maria Sharapova, a reported $1.3 million a year to step on court in its apparel. Serena and Venus Williams have lucrative contracts with Puma and Reebok respectively.

The tennis superstars are also making an impact on off-court fashions. Designers are scrambling to dress the sport's glamour girls at red carpet events while cosmetics, jewellery and watch companies are sealing million-dollar deals. Other players are launching their own fashion labels.

Last year Sharapova, 18, reportedly earned $23.5 million in endorsements and prizes. Andre Agassi was the only tennis player to earn more.

Serena Williams recently launched her own fashion label and collaborates with Puma to design her often outrageous on-court outfits. Rising Australian player Daniella Dominikovic will model her own designs at a charity party in South Yarra on Friday.

Tennis men are also embracing fashion. Andy Roddick and Roger Federer have launched their own fragrances and Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten has a men's fashion label.

The players' obsession with fashion causes much excitement among Melbourne's clothing retailers. Shopping is a favourite pastime for many of the players, who like to hit Chapel Street to check out local designs. On Thursday, Serena Williams bought two gowns from Wayne Cooper.

Prahran-based designer Roger Grinstead said: "We know that they love to shop in Chapel Street and there is that hope that they will pick up some of your garments.

"We all know what a celebrity endorsement can do."
