Sharapova ends Clijsters hoodoo in San Diego
By Matthew Cronin
Sun Aug 6, 10:00 PM ET

Maria Sharapova shocked top seed Kim Clijsters 7-5 7-5 to win the Acura Classic on Sunday.

In grabbing her first title on North American summer hard courts, Sharapova took down reigning U.S. Open champion Clijsters for the first time in five meetings.

"I hung in there during some amazing points in the second set," said the second-seeded Russian.

"I had lost to her four times in a row, so I thought this might be my lucky day. It's amazing to get the title," she said after the one hour 48-minute contest.

Clijsters, who has been contending with a sore back, was broken four times in the first set, but continued to claw at Sharapova.

The Belgian fought off her first set point at 3-5 in a marathon rally that saw her paste a forehand crosscourt winner.

Clijsters scrapped back to 5-5, but could not maintain her momentum as Sharapova easily held to 6-5, and then broke the Belgian to win the set when the world number two committed a forehand error.

Both women stepped up their level in the second set, but Clijsters could never find the rhythm that led her to the Stanford title last week.

Sharapova easily held to lead 6-5 before Clijsters completely lost her way, committing a slew of errors to face three match points.

Sharapova missed a backhand return on the first one, but on the second, she gunned a backhand that kissed the baseline.

"I fought and tried to go for it, but after long points, it was hard to refocus," said Clijsters, who had her 24-match winning streak on North American hard courts broken. "I didn't feel that fresh out there."

Clijsters said Sharapova's game had matured.

"She wasn't going for her shots as much," the Belgian said. "That's where she's improved. In the past, when her game wasn't on, she was still trying to go for it.

"Today, she mixed it up a little more. You see how a player grows up and that's great."

Sharapova agreed that she has improved her point construction.

"Against her, you know you have to be patient," she said. "She gets to a lot of balls and comes up with greats shots defensively. I tried to take that away from her."

Sharapova outlasts Clijsters in Acura final
Posted 8/6/2006 9:01 PM ET

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Maria Sharapova outslugged an erratic Kim Clijsters 7-5, 7-5 Sunday to win the championship of the Acura Classic.
The second-seeded Sharapova won with breaks in the final game of each set, including the only break of the second set, and snapped Clijsters' 24-match winning streak in North American summer hardcourt events.

The title was Sharapova's first since winning at Indian Wells in March, and the 12th of her career. It was also the first time the Russian defeated Clijsters, a former No. 1, in five matches.

"There's not a lot things not to like about my game," said Sharapova, ranked No. 4. "I played a pretty solid five players and came out with two-set wins in each one. It gives me confidence and I feel like I'm match tough again."

The last time Clijsters lost on North American summer hardcourts was here last year in the quarterfinals. Since then she has won four straight summer hardcourt tournaments, including last year at Los Angeles, Toronto and the U.S. Open for her only major title. Clijsters added the Bank of the West Classic title last week at Stanford, Calif.

The top-seeded Clijsters, who previously announced her plans to retire at the end of the 2007 season, was still hampered by a bad back in the finals. Clijsters, ranked No. 2, began to consistently miss her shots as the second set wore on.

"It was tough out there," she said. "I fought. I tried to go for everything when I was down but was not good enough. After long points, it was hard to refocus for the next shot. I didn't feel that fresh."

Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion, and Clijsters played one incredibly long point with Sharapova serving for the first set at 6-5. The point featured a number of outstanding shots and saves on both sides before Sharapova drove a forehand into the net. The crowd erupted into a prolonged standing ovation as both players struggled to catch their breath.

"I still feel it. I was too tired to keep my eyes open," Clijsters said.

"I can't talk about it," joked Sharapova. "I get dizzy thinking about it. It was basically survival."

Sharapova closed out the set four points later when Clijsters netted a forehand.

After the players combined for seven service breaks in the first set, Clijsters held the only service breaks in the final set until the last game. The Belgian failed to convert on one break in the first game, three breaks in the seventh game and two more in the ninth game.

"I think she made a few good first serves," Clijsters said. "On a couple of second serves, I missed. I tried to go for it a little bit too soon."

Sharapova, who failed to serve at the level she did in her semifinal-round win over Patty Schnyder, broke through in the 12th game of the second set with the only service break for either player in the second set to end the 1 hour, 48-minute match.

"I knew that I had to be physically and mentally ready or I was going down," said Sharapova, who earned $196,00 for the victory.

Clijsters, who won $100,000, became the ninth player to surpass $14 million in career earnings.

Sharapova snaps Clijsters' streak to win WTA showdown
Sun Aug 6, 11:14 PM ET

Second-seeded Maria Sharapova beat Kim Clijsters 7-5, 7-5, taking her first triumph in five tries over the Belgian top seed to win a 1.34 million-dollar WTA hardcourt event.

The defeat snapped a 24-match North American summer hardcourt unbeaten streak for Clijsters, the reigning US Open champion.

It was the fourth final of the year for fourth-ranked Sharapova, who won her only prior title of the year at Indian Wells in March.

"Coming into the match I knew I had to be physically and mentally ready or I was going down," Sharapova said. "So it was up to me to follow through with those sayings.

"I'm really happy that I came back and won that first tournament and got a win against someone who I never beat in competiton. It was just my day. I lost to her four times, so I thought this might be my lucky one."

The Russian star, playing for the first time in three weeks, broke Clijsters in the final game to defeat Clijsters after one hour and 48 minutes and claim her 12th career title as well as a top prize of 196,900 dollars.

"To beat a player that's been in the top, that's been playing really well this year and that's No. 2 in the world is a great achievement," Sharapova said.

"But I've got to move on. This is my work to the US Open. I have another task ahead of me."

Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion, did not lose a set at the US Open warm-up event but played some tension-packed tennis to do it. She downed Swiss Patty Schnyder 7-5, 6-4 in Saturday's semi-finals.

"It's amazing to get a title and I have a few more tournaments coming up," said Sharapova. "Going into the US Open is really exciting to finally have a few matches under my belt and hopefully be healthy in one of the biggest Grand Slam tournaments of the world."

Clijsters has never won this event, losing the 2003 final to compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne.

"Another final, especially having such a close match, you always want to go out and finish it," said Clijsters, who was stunned by China's Peng Shaui in last year's quarterfinals.

"I did better then last year. That's way I prefer to look at it."

Complaining of a sore back the entire week, Clijsters felt weary after her ninth match in 12 days.

"I didn't feel my freshest out there, but I tried the best that I could," she said. "I fought and that's the only thing you can do with the way that you feel that day."
