The JAG Relief Action Updates (English Edition)

On our suffering churches and relief activities

A Report from Pastor Ito of Izumi Fukuin Chapel (4/26/2012)

2012-04-26 22:33:13 | Testimony

Praise the Lord.

Thank you for all of your prayers for the relief work that is occurring at the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Relief Support Center and for the salvation and healing of souls in the disaster area.

Everyday at the center we are busy with various relief activities, and as you are well aware, we have begun to provide emotional and spiritual "relief" along with the standard food and relief items. Even still there are a number of people who are suffering with unresolved issues regarding their places of residence.

At the Bible study event that we had the other day there was a man in his forties who walked over an hour from the Okaido neighborhood of Ishinomaki city. He cam and said, "I need to ask for your help," and requested some help with repairing his house.

Yesterday when questioned by a center staff member, it was clear that the house had been declared completely destroyed with the first floor having been flooded and extensive damage to the kitchen. A portion of the house's entry had been repaired but because of a lack of funds, further repairs were not possible. Currently his father and he have no other choice but to live restricted to the second floor of the house. His mother passed away one month after the disaster from trauma induced shock and fatigue. He is without work and with a lack of employment has no direction for how or when he will be able to rebuild his life. He has come a number of times to the relief center in a dejected stupor.

At the recent Bible study he brought a friend along with him and I believe that he has begun to seek after Christ. Please pray for his salvation and that his house could be repaired as quickly as possible, bringing him closer to the standard of living that he had before the disaster.

At the moment, missionary Joyce Kitano is looking into the possibilities of having a volunteer carpenter come from a US Assemblies of God church. Please pray that God would do something great and send workers to display the glory of God.

Even now, a year and a month after the disaster, there are numerous chances to look around and see disaster victims who from the depth of their wounds and the vastness of the damage are not able to get back on their feet again I ask that you would do your best not to forget these great number of people in the disaster area and would intercede for them all the more through support and prayers.

At the center we are preparing for a free trial English class using the "Kid's Brown" curriculum to be held on the 27th and 28th.
There will also be a ladies sandal give away on the afternoon of the 28th.
Finally, please pray that through the relief work, more and more people would be touched by the love of God.

Thank you all for your unchanging love, prayers and support.

A Report from Pastor Ito of Izumi Fukuin Chapel (4/24/2012)

2012-04-24 23:30:16 | Testimony

Praise the Lord.

Thank you for all of your prayers for the relief work that is occurring at the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Relief Support Center and for the salvation and healing of souls in the disaster area.

By the grace of God we were able to hold the second “Word and Tea” event on Tuesday the 24th. On Saturday the 21st we were able to have a wonderful time providing meals and relief items for around 450 people, but today’s gathering was one that focused on the Word and included testimonies, praise and prayers. Since we were not passing out any type of relief goods the people who gathered truly have an interest in the Word, are seeking the Lord and are hungry for Him. It was truly an amazing event completely led by the Lord.

The Lord led around 50 people to attend today’s event and we opened with a time of praise and prayer. As a special guest, we had the retired minister Shigeko Honma, who attends Izumi Chapel, share a testimony of salvation. The sight of watching everyone intently listening and enthusiastically drinking in her salvation testimony was truly moving.

In the previous, first Bible gathering we used the booklet “What kind of book is the Bible” (Word of Life Press) as a textbook, allowing for the attendees to gain more familiarity with the Bible. But for this second Bible gathering we used “True Salvation” (Japan Assemblies of God’s Church Education course for seekers) and had a great time of studying the Word. As part of the gathering we also provided takoyaki as a light snack.

Even after the hour and forty minute meeting there were still a good number of people who stayed around for a time of chatting and praying. I spoke with one person who walked an hour from Ishinomaki city. The current situation in their life is that the emotional trauma from the disaster has yet to heal and that their recovery has failed to progress. They kindly allowed me to pray that the Lord who feels their sorrow and pain would give healing and hope to them.

Among those who attended this event there were some who have already attended either Izumi Chapel’s worship service or camp meeting. As one would imagine there are a number of people who are desirous for us to begin worship services at the support center. In order to be able to hold services at the center by this summer I am prayerfully considering asking some members of the Izumi church to corporate by coming on Sunday afternoon to have worship. By all means, please join with us in prayer for this issue. Thanks to your prayers I feel that God’s love is already at work among the disaster victims and that He has begun doing a new thing. I am sure that we will soon see an abundant harvest of souls!

Many mothers with young children have requested that we start an English conversation class and so we are planning to start classes in May. We are currently planning on using the “Kid’s Brown” curriculum which is being used by a number of churches around the country. We would like to have a test run of the class on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.
In addition, from 2PM on Sunday the 28th we are scheduled to pass out ladies sandals to those who would like them.

From Thursday May 3rd until Monday the 7th the center will be closed so that we can attend the JAG General Council.

May’s activity schedule is as follows:

12th (Sat.)  2PM~  second movie viewing
19th (Sat.)  12PM~  28th meal distribution 10AM & 11AM there will be picture book readings (sponsored by the Hachioji church)
29th (Tue.)  2PM~  third “Word and Tea”event
We appreciate your prayers and support.

A Report from Pastor Ito of Izumi Fukuin Chapel (4/23/2012)

2012-04-23 16:42:51 | Testimony

Praise the Lord.

Thank you for all of your prayers for the relief work that is occurring at the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Relief Support Center and for the salvation and healing of souls in the disaster area. With your prayers we were able to hold the 27th meal distribution on Saturday the 21st.

The cherry blossom front has finally pushed its way up north to Miyagi prefecture and so the cherry trees in and around Higashi Matsushima and Ishinomaki have begun to bloom. Up until the day before the event we had been having rather chilly temperatures but for the event the weather turned to a nice spring day which led to people gathering at the center two hours before the start time; an hour before we started the event the 120 odd chairs that we had set up inside the center had already been filled. There were also a number of people sitting in the seats outside and standing about.

This time we had Mr. and Mrs. Fuse who pastor the Yamagata church, Mr. and Mrs. Okubo who pastor the Yonezawa church, Mr. and Mrs. Yokoyama who pastor the Kitakata church, 6 members from the Hachioji church, pastor Dan from the Yokota church and 2 of his members, 2 members from the Shinohara church, 1 member each from the Fujisawa and Shin-nakano churches as well as 20 members from the Izumi church and the normal center volunteer staff.  In addition we had 5 local disaster victims whose heart's have been opened to the Lord and through the relief work and Bible classes have come to Christ, join with us making for a group of about 50 person ministry team.

Up until the meal distribution’s start time we were blessed to have pastor Nozomu Yokoyama from the Kitakata church share in worship and a testimony, pastor Dan from the Yokota church shared a short message and Emma Trale, an administrative staff member from the "Hope Festival" give an encouraging greeting. There was also the Chinese spinning top performance by brother Isonuma from the Hachioji church which was a big hit with everyone. I am so thankful that in this way, even before the meal distribution began, we were able to have so many guests boldly share testimonies of God's grace. I praise the Lord for I truly believe that these meal distributions are a work of the Lord as I watched all those who attended; not one left their seat, they sang praise songs with us, listened intently to the messages and prayed aloud with us.

By 11:45 we were pretty much right on schedule and so we had pastor Tsutomu Fuse from Yamagata share a short message, pray and then we began the meal distribution. The main dish was pan-fried noodles with sausages. Some people took their “meal packs” (disposable chopsticks, napkin, bottled green tea, a dessert and a tract) and ate at their tables while others took their food home but regardless they were all very grateful.
Also, as people were returning home we were able to give them a “relief goods pack”(tissues, bath powder, detergent, food seasonings etc.) which was provided by the Hachioji church. And for the children that came we passed out a kid’s present along with some snacks that the Yokota church provided.

This time around we prepared 450 servings of food and relief items and in 40 minutes we were completely out. I believe that because of the good weather that God graciously gave us and because of His presence we saw a large number of people turn out. I am thankful that through the food and relief items which were examples of God’s love, as well as the feast of the Gospel message; many people were drawn to the Lord. I am also thankful first for those who came and ministered, as well as for those who prayed and also for those who helped in various different ways.

Currently there is a great need for spring clothing at the support center. The season for warm winter clothing is over and now many people are asking for spring appropriate clothes. We would appreciate any help that you can provide.

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 24th, we will hold the second“Word and Tea” event. Please pray that many disaster victims will come to this event, that the presence of the Lord will be there and that we will see the work of salvation among those that come. Also please pray for the anointing to be upon those who minster (the volunteer staff and 15 members of the Izumi church).

I give all of the glory to God.
Thank you so much for your ceaseless prayers.

The current state of things at the support center as of April the 19th.

As you can see from the picture the center is packed with rows of relief goods that have been donated by various churches around the country. With the arrival of spring, requests for spring and summer clothing have increased. I would appreciate your help.

At the center the whole day has been given to preparations for the 27th meal distribution that will be on Saturday the 21st. Along with the staff we are also being aided by the ever present local welfare officer, Mr. Shiroma, as well as the recently saved, Ms. Kikuchi, from the Omagari neighborhood. The morning of the 20th will also be a prep day. We will be able to do the meal distribution on the 21st thanks to a great number of volunteers. Please pray for the safety of the volunteers and that they would overflow with the presence of the Lord and His generous grace.

A Report from Pastor Toyomi Sanga of Koriyama Grace Garden Chapel (4/18/2012)

2012-04-18 17:47:55 | Testimony

Thank you for praying for Tohoku and for Fukushima.

I am writing as one reporting on site; sharing that which I hear so that you can pray.

《Personnel changes》
I was recently approached by a member of our church’s gospel choir who happens to work in the medical field.
Doctors and nurses are leaving the medical facilities in Fukushima including Koriyama.
Even before the disaster the hospitals and clinics were understaffed and now there is an increasing lack of hands to go around making the burden all the more serious for those medical professionals still here.

Last month Fukushima prefecture made an appeal to the whole country of Japan with the goal of hiring 500 nurses and prepared an orientation session for those who would come. There were 5 people that came from outside the prefecture. The lady that approached me was one of those five people. She said, "When I saw all of these people I decided that I would live and work in Fukushima."

According to my junior high school son's home room teacher there are a number of teachers in the prefecture that are living away from their families. Especially those teachers with families, they have moved their spouses and children to other prefectures and are living and working alone. There are also some teachers who have slipped into poor health as well because of all that has happened.

According to an acquaintance that works in the childcare field, not only have the number of children decreased but so have the number of childcare workers.

The hairdresser that I use, who also went with me to the Koriyama evacuation center to give "Volunteer Cuts" told me the following:
A number of his stylist friends have gone elsewhere to find work. Also, a number of his customers, family members of people who have transferred into Koriyama from other prefectures have mostly returned to their home towns.
"I guess there's no help'n it. Their lonely," he said.

《Pool water》
According to my daughter, who attends high school in Motomiya city which is between Fukashima city and Koriyama city, the water in the outdoor pool at her school has sat there undisturbed since March 11 of last year.
If they drain the pool the contaminated water will flow into the local rice paddies and river.
She said that her friends say, "Do you think they'll leave the water that way forever!?"

The dirt around the school was removed and replaced with uncontaminated dirt but the highly radioactive pool water is just sitting their. The fact that her school was a hot spot measuring 12 microsiervets was a big issue during last year's school term. I'm pretty sure that the dirt in the entire athletic field was replaced as well.
After that we haven't heard any reports from the school.

《Worries over children's health》
For the sake of the children who can't go outside to play, last December a doctor in Koriyama approached the city officials and they began to work together to convert a recently vacated supermarket into a large indoor play area.
Each day from the time it opens there is a long line in the parking lot. Parents even come from outside of Koriyama city, sometimes over an hour away, so that their children can play. It's free but there is a 90 minute time limit.

《The next step in relief work》
The thing that we are hearing from retirees and elderly people who live in the local temporary housing is, "We don't need anymore relief items, but we would like for you to stop by and spend some time with us."
Similar to what I wrote above we are also hearing parents with children say, "It would really be great if we had a place nearby where our kids could safely play indoors."

Also as various municipalities closer to the destroyed nuclear power plant are released from the quarantine restrictions and as people return to their homes, I am sure that we will need volunteers to help clean up the residences since they have sat unused for over a year. This has resulted in spreading mold, livestock excreting here and there and overgrown weeds.

《My prayer》
1) That the number of people leaving Fukushima would stop and that we could keep the people that we have.
2) That we can open an indoor play area for children (no matter how small scale it is).
3) That volunteers would be provided to help clean up the homes in those areas that have been released from the quarantine restrictions.
4) That the people who have evacuated to the Koriyama area would be able to settle down and find it to be their second home; a place of warmth and relationship. (A place that is easy to gather much like the Grace Cafe that we held the other day.) And to do that we will need capital, personnel and a location!!!
5) That we who live here in Fukushima would encourage one another with hope and treat one another kindly, ending the discontent breeding talk of a lack of this and that, instead we would work together with wisdom and sacrifice so that in time we all can live happily back in our home towns.

A Report from Pastor Toyomi Sanga of Koriyama Grace Garden Chapel Diary (4/16/2012)

2012-04-18 17:44:11 | Testimony

《Diary  A hot meal》 4/16 (Mon)

The cherry blossom buds on a branch sway gently against a soft pink sky.
"Just a little longer," I say too myself.

The magnolia trees lining the road running along the local shopping mall burst forth in bloom seemingly overnight.
Last year...I didn't even notice those trees.

This year I am able to really enjoy spring.

Last Saturday, Grace Cafe held our "Cherry Blossom Party" to support and encourage the disaster victims.
While the timing didn't coincide with the real cherry trees blooming the artificial cherry blossom decorations and the light pink shirts that we bought at Uniqlo for the staff were a big hit.

80% of the attendees had lived in the village of Tomioka. There were also people from the towns of Futaba and Kawauchi. If you include the couple from Sukagawa that showed up at the end (their home in Sukagawa was destroyed by the earthquake) there were 33 adults and 7 children in all.

At the start there was a tense atmosphere but eventually things settled down and conversations such as, “Where abouts did you live? (in Tomioka)” and “Hey you know the Jone’s don’t ya?”warmed everyone up. All over the room they settled into cordial conversations.

I sang a solo medley of the traditional Japanese song Furusato and Amazing Grace.
Even during the song there were some whose conversations did not die down.
Some watched me sing while wiping tears away, some listened intently and a few old ladies sang along with me.
And there was even a man who just sat the whole time with his arms folded.

I was then greeted nervously by the head of the Tomioka village council, which was followed by a heartwarming greeting from Mr. “W”, a disaster victim, who said that he wanted to support the work of Grace Community Service.

Then Ms. “H”, a young mother in her twenties, came and told me, “Every week I get permission and return to my house.”

“What? You can go back temporarily every week?”I asked her.
“Well, no...usually you can’t, but because of my father’s work I can get special permission...”she evasively replied.

“I’m sure you want to see your home,” I said.

“Well all I get to see is that the mold is growing here and there and that the ceiling is starting to peel away. But I want to keep a record of it all,” she said as you pulled out here cell phone and showed me some photos that she had taken.

Pictures of a peeling ceiling.
Pictures of tatami mats covered in green and black spots, half the walls have turned a dark green and the curtains...
Ms. “H” said, “I had just moved into this apartment with all new furniture and appliances two weeks before the earthquake.”

She continued, “As much as I want to go back I can’t live there. The outside east wall of the apartment measures 12 microsierverts of radiation and even the inside measures 8. The west side measures 0.6. If you just look at the west side I guess it seems okay and the local administration is encouraging everyone to return to their homes but you just never know where the “hotspots” are and so I can’t go back.”

She shared with me that up until last month her son had been attending the temporary schools (from pre-school up through junior high) that the town of Tomioka had built but she just moved him to an elementary school here in Koriyama city.

She said, “The new school just started up the lunch program and when my son returned home he told me, ‘hot meals are really yummy’. The temporary schools could only provide cold boxed lunches.”

The temporary school can only provide boxed lunches because they are not equipped with kitchens to cook hot meals.
It really seems like a long time ago when there was no gasoline, no bread, no water, no toilet paper...

As I looked around and see that we have returned to normal life, it hit me,

There are still children nearby who are not getting hot meals!

I took a quick glance around the room.

Some people were leaning forward, others had their arms crossed; each person tells a story just by their movements and posture.

Already one year. I watch everyone as they continue their conversations and look to see if I can detect any sense of the year that has passed.

We have been praying that Grace Community Service’s Grace Cafe would and will be a place where people can meet to have conversations about Jesus being their hope for the future. And it was through this place that we were able to share about the upcoming Wakaba Party in May.

I mentioned, "We are planning a potluck luncheon. Ladies would you please bring your best dish no matter what it is?" and all of the ladies eyes lit up.

This time the theme color will of course be bright green to match the fresh spring leaves.

A Report from Pastor Ito of Izumi Fukuin Chapel (4/13/2012)

2012-04-13 18:56:15 | Testimony

Praise the Lord.

Thank you all for your support and prayers for the relief work occurring at the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Grace Support Center.

Thanks to your prayers, on Thursday the 12th we held the fourth "Tea and Talk" amidst the grace of the Lord. We have held these events once a month starting in January of this year. The events in January and March were run by the students of the Bible school and the February and April events were planned by the support center staff.

The end to the long cold winter was signaled by the warm weather felt on that afternoon, and as always, an hour before the start time we had a number of disaster victims gathering for the event. The staff greeted the visitors and we had a heartwarming time of chatting, enveloping us in an even warmer atmosphere than what the weather provided.

When started at the scheduled time of 2PM and most of the chairs at the 12 big round tables that we had set out were filled. We had an opening greeting and then were blessed by an opening prayer from retired pastor Kiyoshi Honma which was then followed by a sing along of the beloved song "Oboro Zukiyo" (trans. night with a cloudy moon). After the event one lady mentioned to me, "Thank you for singing ‘Oboro Zukiyo’. I was moved to tears by it." Her statement makes me think that including songs that express the "Japanese spirit" are an important element to seeing the hearts of the disaster victims opened.

After the sing along staff members Kibo and Miho led a fun game time followed by some wonderful snacks of homemade chiffon cake, ice cream, bite sized daifuku and fruit.

After that we continued with singing a hymn, a brief message from the Word and then had a time of prayer. Through it all everyone paid close attention and listened intently to the preaching of the Word. I was truly moved by the fact that God's presence is always here with us.
To close out the event we had a time of chatting mixed with the attendees filling out questionnaires and then ended the blessed fourth "Tea and Talk" event with prayer from pastor Honma.
I thank the Lord that even after the event had ended; a number of people hung around to relish the atmosphere and chatted with our smiling staff members. Some of those present even said that they wanted to try attending Sunday morning worship at Izumi Chapel on the 15th.

I really feel that thanks to everyone's prayers the love of God is doing a real and new thing amidst the disaster victims. I am certain that we will very soon see an abundant harvest of souls. Hallelujah! Praise God!

On Saturday the 21st we will hold the 27th meal distribution. A number of churches, pastors and believers totaling about 50 people will gather together as one and serve the disaster victims through the Love of the Spirit.

Starting on Friday there are a number of ministry teams scheduled to come to stay at both the center and Izumi church. I would greatly appreciate if you would pray for all of these minister’s protection, anointing and that they can serve with love filled hearts.

Thank you for all of your prayer and support.

Report on Kamaishi from Pastor Toyomitsu Shibuya of Aomori Joyful Chapel (4/4/2012)

2012-04-04 21:49:33 | Testimony

We came to Kamaishi to do some relief work but because of extreme low air pressure over Japan we suffered a blizzard as well as typhoon like wind and rain. There was serious damage from the storm such as a water tank that serviced a temporary housing site in Kamaishi being ripped of a rooftop by the wind. Even though we were going around by car it was still scary to think about what might come flying at the car. Please pray for our safety as we do relief work and for the safety of those in the disaster areas and temporary housing.
It is also a problem of how we will get back to Aomori.

A Report from Pastor Ito of Izumi Fukuin Chapel (4/4/2012)

2012-04-04 11:28:01 | Testimony

Higashi Matsushima Amazing Grace Support Center's first "Word and Tea" event.

Praise the Lord.

I am so thankful for all of your prayers and support for the relief work that we are doing at the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Grace Support Center as well as for the healing and salvation of souls in the disaster area.

The first ever "Word and Tea" event, which you kindly prayed for, was held on Friday the 30th amidst the wonderful blessing of the grace of the Lord. Up to now at the center we have been able to share the Word, little by little, through the distribution of relief goods in coordination with events such as meal distributions, concerts, tea times, concerts and other general relief activities.

Now one year after the earthquake, thanks to all of your prayers, the love of the Lord is starting to open the doors of the disaster victim's hearts so that they can be healed. In addition, we can feel that people have become spiritually hungry and so we felt led to hold a gathering focusing on the “Bible”, and thanks to your prayers and support we were able to do just that by the grace of God. I give all of the glory to God, praise the Lord!
This time around we had members from the Izumi church, pastor Glen and members from the Shinohara church, a gentleman from the Soka church, pastor Maki Ichikawa who came all the way from Shinai Christ Church in Osaka, a lady staff member from the “Tohoku Hope Festival,” and the local welfare officer Mr. Shiroma all help to minister.
Unlike previous events, “The Word and Tea” event was clearly an evangelistic outreach and so we had no idea how many people to expect. Before we began, when the ministers were meeting together to pray, I encouraged everyone by saying, “Since today is the “Word and Tea” event, I really have no idea how many people will attend in comparison to the meal distributions and other events.
There may only be a few that attend...two people or maybe just one.
But however many come we will faithfully and caringly minister the love of God to each person.” Then we prayed together.
However, 30 minutes before we even began, God sent a number of people and in the end we had filled exactly the number of tables and chairs that we had prepared; enough seats for 50 people. Praise the Lord!

At opening time we began with worship, pastor Glen welcomed everyone and led an opening prayer and then the special guest, pastor Maki Ichikawa, gave a greeting and shared a testimony of the grace of Christ. We continued with a few more worship songs and finished with a time of studying the Word.
The sight of the disaster victims sitting there and intently studying the Bible study textbooks was both beautiful and moving. I praise God that I was able to see His presence among them and to see His Kingdom finally begin to expand here in the disaster area.
After roughly 30 minutes of studying the Bible and praying we took some time to have tea and snacks. While eating the special treat of takoyaki that pastor Glen’s church members had prepared, we all sat around chatting and answering people’s questions regarding that day’s study, the Bible and church. During which some people said, “I would really like to try and see what church is like.”Finally pastor Maki prayed over everyone and we drew the first “Word and Tea” to a close.

At the Higashi Matsushima Amazing Grace Support Center we are continuing with our normal relief work of providing kerosene and heating stoves but now we have also begun the real work of spiritual relief through the gospel.
On Thursday the 12th of this month we will hold the 4th “Tea and Talk”.

Also, on Saturday the 21st we have planned the 27th meal distribution.

Tuesday the 24th we have scheduled the second “Word and Tea” event.

Please remember these events in your prayers and if the Lord leads you to come and join us in ministering that would be wonderful.

Also, from April on, the meal distributions will occur once a month generally on the 3rd Saturday.

That would be 5/19, 6/16 and either 7/21 or 28 respectively.

At the moment, we are making preparations of purchasing items for each meal distribution a week in advance of the actual event. The actual work of setting up tents, assembling relief items to be distributed and preparing the ingredients for the next day's meals is being done on the Friday before the event. We would gladly welcome your help from Friday on. When you come, please make use of the free lodging at either the support center or The Izumi church.

We are eagerly waiting your inquiries. Please reach us by

A Report From Pastor Fuyuki Okuda of Iwaki Assembly(3/31/2012)

2012-03-31 23:55:35 | Testimony

Saturday 3/31/2012
Today a couple from the Jyujyo church came as volunteers and went with us as we visited the nearby temporary housing site.
Half way through the work it started pouring down rain and so we got soaked as we continued passing out vegetables to the residents.
As we were distributing the items, a number of people let us know that they were moving to more permanent residences.
When we were finished with that we returned to the church and dried our clothes. Then we went to a “conversation lounge” in the temporary housing where people from Narahamachi had evacuated to. We had an enjoyable time talking with the people there. I returned earlier than the others and on the way I dropped by the Mominoki Relief Center and picked up some clothes that another believer had donated.
