Alan Smith has been put in temporary charge of Notts County after John Sheridan was sacked.

The former Manchester Unitedman joined the Magpies as a player and coach in 2014, and has made more than 50 appearances for the club.

He joins the likes of Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes in management after playing under Ferguson at Old Trafford . Smith spent three years in Manchester between 2004 and 2007, although his career was hampered by a horror injury at Anfield.

He takes over Notts County ahead of their match at Morecambe at the weekend after Sheridan oversaw just six wins in 24 league matches.

United legend Ryan Giggs has made no secret of his desire to step into the managerial hotseat, but has not yet been offered a position after leaving Old Trafford in the summer after two seasons as assistant to Louis van Gaal.
