冬空に花火が上がり、祭りは最高潮を迎えた＝３日午後８時４１分、埼玉県秩父市、
ユネスコ（国連教育科学文化機関）の無形文化遺産への登録が決まった「山・鉾（ほこ）・屋台行事」の一つ、埼玉県秩父市の秩父祭（秩父夜祭）が３日、大祭を迎えた。豪華絢爛（けんらん）な４基の「屋台」と２基の「笠鉾（かさほこ）」と呼ばれる山車が、朝から夜まで市内を巡った。
京都の祇園祭、飛騨の高山祭とともに「日本三大曳山（ひきやま）祭り」に数えられ、３００年以上の伝統を誇る。
クライマックスとなる傾斜角約２５度の急坂「団子坂」では、重さ約１２～２０トンの山車を「ホーリャイ、ホーリャイ」のかけ声とともに引き上げた。冬空に約６５００発の花火が打ち上げられ、約３３万人の観客が勇壮な祭りに酔いしれた。平日だった昨年より約１３万人増え、市観光課は「週末開催に加え、無形文化遺産の登録決定と、登録行事の中で決定後初の祭りになり、注目された」とみている。（高山顕治）
