The spot is an institution under operation uniquely in the world now as nuclear waste storage pits which are underground.
The radioactive waste containing a worker's radiological protection dress etc. which were used on the occasion of nuclear weapons development is kept.
However, it developed into the situation where the fire of the track for conveyance breaks out and americium and plutonium are detected on the surface of the earth at the point 650-meter-below ground in February, this year.
The cause of the accident is not released.
Moreover, similarly the accident by which 22 workers (13 original announcements) touch a radioactive material, and are contaminated has occurred in February.
The population of New Mexico is 14 million people now.
However, information dissemination from the country which manages a storehouse is made slow, and since there is also no information dissemination by an organization [ neutral / other than the government ], the residents who live in the neighborhood of institutions have complained of uneasiness.

米国西岸のニューメキシコ州地下655メートル地点にある放射性廃棄物貯蔵施設に保管されていた放射性廃棄物57バレル（約13立方メートル）が周囲に漏出、周辺地域の汚染と住民への健康被害が懸念されている。

現場は地下にある放射性廃棄物貯蔵庫としては現在世界で唯一稼働中の施設。核兵器開発の際に使用された作業員の放射線防護服等を含む放射性廃棄物が保管されている。しかし今年2月には地下650メートルの地点で運搬用トラックの火災が発生、地表でアメリシウムとプルトニウムが検出される事態に発展した。事故の原因は公表されていない。また、同じく2月には作業員22名（当初発表13名）が放射性物質に触れ被ばくする事故が起きている。
ニューメキシコの人口は現在1400万人。しかし貯蔵庫を管理する国からの情報提供は遅々としており、政府以外の中立な機関による情報提供も無いことから、施設の近隣に住む住民たちは不安を訴えている。

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, is the world's third deep geological repository (after closure of Germany's Repository for radioactive waste Morsleben and the Schacht Asse II Salt Mine) licensed to permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste for 10,000 years[1] that is left from the research and production of nuclear weapons. The plant is estimated to incur a total cost of $19B.[2]
It is located approximately 26 miles (42 km) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in eastern Eddy County, in an area known as the southeastern New Mexico nuclear corridor which also includes the National Enrichment Facility near Eunice, New Mexico, the Waste Control Specialists low-level waste disposal facility just over the border near Andrews, Texas, and the International Isotopes, Inc. facility to be built near Eunice, New Mexico.[3]
In 2010, the USDOE mothballed previous plans to develop Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, leaving WIPP as a prime candidate for a replacement facility to store waste currently accumulating at U.S. commercial nuclear power plants. Various mishaps at the plant in 2014 brought focus to the problem of what to do with this growing backlog of waste and whether or not WIPP would be a safe repository.[4]

WIPP施設概要
米国核廃棄物隔離試験施設(Waste Isolation Pilot Plant、または略してWIPP)は、核兵器の研究開発によって生じる超ウラン元素の高レベル・長半減期放射性廃棄物の、恒久的な処分のためのアメリカで最初の地層処分施設である。ニューメキシコ州カールズバッドの東方約42kmに位置している。核燃料サイクルの最終工程である。
米国エネルギー省では1974年に廃棄施設建設を立案し、20年に及ぶ科学調査、公聴会、規制法案の制定などの後1999年3月に操業を開始した。2070年まで操業(廃棄物搬入)の予定である。2010年の時点で9000回廃棄物が搬入された。周辺のカルスト地形などの地質調査は継続中である。
地層の安定していると思われるテキサス西部からニューメキシコ南東部のen:Delaware Basinの岩塩層が適合地として選ばれた。廃棄物保管場所は地下655メートルの厚さ1000メートルの岩塩層中に掘削設置された。岩塩層の物理的可塑性(plasticity)から亀裂などの封印効果が期待されているが、ドイツの岩塩層の地層処分施設en:Schacht Asse IIでは地下水への放射性物質の漏洩が観測され、貯蔵空間の圧縮・岩塩ドームの崩落なども危惧されている[1]。
貯蔵廃棄物編集
WIPPに搬入される廃棄物は一定の放射能以上(100 nCi/グラム)でアルファ崩壊する半減期20年以上のTRU廃棄物に限られていたが、2000年9月からは放射性廃棄物とその他の危険物の混合廃棄物も受入が始まった。 また廃棄物に含まれる水分の(放射性物質から放出されるエネルギーによる)分解による水素爆発を防ぐため廃棄物収納容器は通気機能を備えている。
また全米からの廃棄物の搬入に関してはその都度衛星追跡等[2]の最新の技術と設備で厳重な警備のもとに執り行われる[3]。
また搬送ルートにおける事故を想定してWIPPでは非常事態対処メンバーとして23000人の専門家を教育訓練している[4]。
施設および周辺地域の管理編集
操業中および2070年の施設閉鎖後も環境汚染を防ぐ為、施設および周辺地域の隔離・管理は引き続けられる。米国環境保護庁では管理期間を1万年としており、予測できない遠い未来を考慮して各種の未来への伝言(警告)措置が検討されている。敷地周辺に土塁を構築し、何十もの標識を敷設、警告文も現在の国連の公用語(英語、ロシア語、中国語、フランス語、アラビア語、スペイン語)とナバホ語に加え象形文字による記述→（1万年後に今の人類がいないかもしれない）も考慮されている[5]。
