Cowtown Hoedown in New Salem

Drive through parts of North Dakota and you`ll see some of the country`s largest roadside animal sculptures.

From the Jamestown Buffalo, to the Sandhill Crane in Steele.

These sculptures help attract tourists to North Dakota and for one community, it`s one large cow that attracts residents and visitors each year.

It stands at about 38 feet tall, 50 feet wide, and weighs in at 12-thousand pounds. Aside from being the second giant roadside animal sculpture in North Dakota, Salem Sue also helps to promote tourism for the town of about 1-thousand people.

"I was here for the dedication of it, the Christianing of the cow. It was Christianed with a bottle of milk," said Roger Klusman, a Lions Club member.

The third weekend in July is one of the biggest celebrations for New Salem. The New Salem Cowtown Hoedown is a weekend long event that brings together new and familiar faces, right underneath Salem Sue.

"You know, it`s still a small community and it`s an opportunity, people get busy with their lives in particular in this area, with farming, there`s putting in the crop, taking off the crop, so this gives everybody a weekend to just get together," said Dennis Buchholz, a Lions Club member.

"Breakfast Under the Cow" is one tradition put on by the Lions Club, that gives people the opportunity to gather at what residents call the best view in Morton County.

"I love coming up on this hill and looking out, it`s just beautiful," said Dennis.

"You could see for miles and miles," said Roger.

Salem Sue was erected in 1974 by the New Salem Lions Club and was built to honor and advertise dairymen, their herds and the production of high quality milk. The Lion`s Club event held at the top of Salem Sue`s hill helps raise money for the town`s schools, and pays for free medical services like eye exams for the community.

It`s one landmark that reunites people each year, all while promoting their hometown to people passing by.
