Maybe Masayoshi Son's successor will be AI

Taking the podium at SoftBank Group's annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday, founder and chief executive Masayoshi Son was in full tech-mogul mode. "Some say SoftBank is a mobile phone company, but that's wrong," he said. "We are an information revolution company. A cellphone is just a device. From now on, we will be in an age where all infrastructure will be connected by information networks."

Son has about 30 targets lined up in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics and the internet of things. SoftBank, he made it clear, intends to be at the forefront of all these fields.

The boss likes to think big. In 2010, Son announced a strategy for the next three decades, over which time he aims to forge some 5,000 partnerships and expand SoftBank's market capitalization to 200 trillion yen ($1.79 trillion). He did not stop there:~

About 30% of homes in Japan may be vacant in 2033
A private research institute estimates that about 30 percent of Japanese houses will be vacant in 16 years unless they are reoccupied or demolished.

Nomura Research Institute forecasts that 21.66 million houses will be empty in 2033.

That's more than double the figure in the most recent survey by the internal affairs ministry. It says the country had 8.2 million vacant homes in 2013, accounting for 13.5 percent of the total.

Vacant properties could be used by criminals. They also make it more difficult for local authorities to prepare for disasters.

Japan brewers boost nonalcoholic beer production

With their nonalcoholic beers gaining popularity and sales of the real stuff declining, Japan's Kirin Brewery and Suntory Beer are switching gears.

Kirin plans to boost monthly production of its Zeroichi, which is selling beyond the company's expectations, to three times the initial target, while Suntory is increasing the June-July production of its All-Free by about 10% from a year ago. This will lift Suntory's full 2017 production target by 4%, to 7.2 million cases [one case equals 20 633ml bottles].

Kirin sold 630,000 cases of Zeroichi -- nearly 50% of its initial annual target -- in just two months.

Suntory estimates that nonalcoholic beer sales in Japan will grow 2% this year to 18 million cases.
On the other side of the coin, sales of regular beer are on the wane. This is not likely to change, considering the National Tax Agency on June 1 began clamping down on what it calls excessive discounts on alcoholic beverages.

Foreign guests set record in Kyoto, pass 50% occupancy rate

Foreigners made up more than 50 percent of the guests at major hotels in Kyoto in April, but some lodging operators are worried that their regular domestic customers are being left out in the cold.

While hotels are pleased with the hike in foreign visitors, the demand on rooms is raising concerns.

Education ministry says Kake papers exist after follow-up probe, dealing a blow to Abe’s Cabinet
Education minister Hirokazu Matsuno said Thursday that the ministry has found digital copies of 14 of 19 documents related to the Kake Gakuen scandal, including those suggesting the Cabinet Office pressured the ministry to approve a university project citing “the intent” of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The confirmed copies of the documents will deal a serious blow to Abe’s Cabinet, as the government has denied their existence.

The ministry was forced to reopen its probe into the papers this week after heated public criticism following media reports of statements by anonymous whistleblowers and former top ministry official Kihei Maekawa.

With work reform underway, Japan starts in on vacation
Getting parents' and kids' holidays in sync could enrich the lives of both

The Japanese government seeks to both break up school holidays and have workers take more paid leave, aiming to stoke year-round domestic tourism and give parents and children more time together.

A council on leave reform to be set up in mid-June will include representatives of the education and industry ministries and the Japan Tourism Agency, as well as private citizens.

Starting with the 2018 school year, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government looks to shave a week off the end of school's summer vacation and move the lost break days elsewhere to create a Kids' Week -- a new cluster of holidays akin to Golden Week. This could mean giving children extra time off during the school year adjoining national holidays, or adding two days or so before and after holidays specific to particular locales.

Area growth sought through private expressway exits

The transport ministry plans to establish a new system that will allow private companies to build expressway exits and entrances.

Under the new system, companies would be able to connect the exits directly to their shopping malls and logistics bases, which could boost local economies. By utilizing private funds, the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry also aims to increase the overall number of expressway on- and off-ramps to equal the numbers in the United States and Europe.

Under the current system, only entities such as expressway companies — which manage roads — and local governments are permitted to build on- and off-ramps on expressways. The new system, however, would allow private companies to submit construction plans for such access points, which the government would then screen before giving permission for construction.

Bubble-generation singles give middle-age marriage a shot

Proving there is no age limit to marriage or romance, a growing number of Japanese in their late 40s and early 50s are taking their first shot — or even second or more — at tying the knot.

Driven by a desire for a romantic relationship, regardless of age, many people who lived through the asset-inflated bubble economy before it imploded in early 1990s are seen as wanting to enjoy the present despite today’s global economic uncertainties. And they’re turning to marriage as a way to do so.

At a time when the marriage overall is declining, the rise of people saying their nuptials at age 40 or older is being viewed as a developing trend, according to the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.

Japan's jobs-to-applicants ratio highest in 43 years
Figure exceeds 'bubble economy' years

The active job openings-to-applicants ratio in Japan for April was 1.48 (seasonally-adjusted), hitting its highest level since February 1974, according to data released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Tuesday. March's figure was 1.45.

The latest data underscores the country's labor shortage amid the ageing of society and the declining population. April's ratio exceeds figures in the early 1990s, when Japan was experiencing the bubble economy.(Nikkei : 5/30)

Suicides down, but Japan still second highest among major industrialized nations, report says
The number of suicides in Japan was 21,897 in 2016, hitting the lowest in 22 years, but suicide remains the No. 1 cause of death among people in the 15-39 age groups.

Japan’s suicide rate is the sixth highest in the world and the second worst among eight major industrialized nations, according to the latest government white paper on suicide measures released Tuesday.

This year’s report, approved by the Cabinet, shows that the number of people who took their own life declined to 21,897 in 2016, the lowest level in 22 years. But the figures also show that suicide was the top cause of death among people in five age groups from 15 to 39, a trend that stands out amid a decline in other generations.
