The term “comfort women” is a euphemism for as many as 200,000 girls and young women, mostly from the Korean peninsula, who were coerced into working in Japanese frontline brothels before and during the second world war.

He fogot to mention the fact that Korean woman were also coerced into working in Korean brothels for U.S. troops during and after Korean War.

It is vital to mention this fact in order to put the topic in the proper context and give the voices of the Korean women ignored and silenced by Korean ultra-nationalism.

The agreement included an apology for the women’s ordeal, but Japan refused to accept legal responsibility, maintaining its official position that all compensation claims were settled by a bilateral peace treaty in 1965. In addition, Tokyo committed to setting up a $9mn fund to care for the dwindling number of surviving sex slaves.

This is highly misleading.

Japanese government issued apologies to the former comfort women several times.

All compensation claims were settled by a bilateral peace treaty in 1965.

And yet, Japan compensated the former comfort women through The Asian Women's Fund in 2000's

And yet, Japan agreed to give more compensation to the Korean comfort women in 2015.

But the biggest obstacle to fully implementing the agreement is a Japanese demand that the South Korean government order the removal of comfort women statues across the country.

Wrong. He can read neither Japanese nor Korean.

Japanese government called upon Korean to remove the comfort women statues in front of Japanese embassy in South Korea. Japanese government does not demand to remove all the statues across the country.

I for one think the statues are necessary to remind Koreans that Korean government has not compensated nor apologized to the former comfort women it coerced into working for US troops.
