South Korean survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima are seeking an apology from the U.S. government along with an acknowledgement that the use of such an explosive device constituted an illegal act.

The group of hibakusha, which also includes their children, submitted a request with the Daegu District Court on Aug. 3 asking it to serve as a mediator to obtain the apology as well as compensation from the U.S. government.

If the court mediation fails, the group intends to file a lawsuit to force the South Korean judicial system to decide whether Washington bears a moral obligation for the devastation caused by the Aug. 6, 1945, blast that claimed about 140,000 lives.

Among those taking part are Lee Gok-ji, 77, from Busan. Lee was 5 years old and living in Hiroshima when the bomb detonated.

Also in the group is Daegu resident Han Jeong-soon, 58, whose parents were in Hiroshima on that day.

Besides securing an admission by Washington that dropping the atomic bomb was illegal, the group is calling on the U.S. government to release all information it possesses on the hibakusha as well as an apology; conduct an investigation into the suffering experienced by the hibakusha; and to compensate for the damages by establishing a foundation.

In addition to the U.S. government, the group's request also targets three U.S. companies that were involved in manufacturing the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb, and producing the nuclear materials that resulted in the explosion.

The group also calls on the South Korean government to negotiate with Japan to confirm that South Korean hibakusha have the right to seek compensation from the Japanese government.

In August 2011, the Constitutional Court in South Korea ruled that the South Korean government's failure to negotiate with Japan on their right to demand compensation is unconstitutional.
