'She could no longer follow an argument from beginning to end,' said one close friend. 'She would lose the point halfway through. It was very confusing for her and unsettling for us. It was hard for everyone. The hearing loss exacerbated the problem.



Then came the death of her beloved Denis in 2003, after 52 years of marriage. It was a shattering blow to someone in such a fragile mental state. Grief stricken, she slipped into depression and her mind deteriorated further



Her daughter Carol revealed in her memoir that her mother actually often forgot that her husband had died. 'I had to keep giving her the bad news over and over again. Every time it finally sank in that she'd lost her husband of more than 50 years she would look at me and sadly and ask softly, “Oh. Were we all there?”.'






By now it wasn't just the memory loss which afflicted her. She was struggling to speak because she found it increasingly difficult to form words.

　小学校の新入生への防犯ブザー配布を朝鮮学校に限り取りやめた東京都町田市教委は８日、一転して配布を決め、西東京朝鮮第二幼初級学校（町田市）に郵送した。市教委は「社会情勢に引っ張られた判断を反省したい」としている。

「司法権の独立揺るがす」資料見つかる

昭和３２年にアメリカ軍基地を巡って起きたいわゆる「砂川事件」の裁判で、「アメリカ軍の駐留は憲法違反」と判断した１審の判決のあとに当時の最高裁判所の長官がアメリカ側に１審の取り消しを示唆したとする新たな文書が見つかりました。
研究者は、司法権の独立を揺るがす動きがあったことを示す資料として注目しています。

「砂川事件」は、昭和３２年７月、東京のアメリカ軍・旧立川基地の拡張計画に反対したデモ隊が基地に立ち入り、学生ら７人が起訴されたもので、１審の東京地方裁判所は、「アメリカ軍の駐留は戦力の保持を禁じた憲法９条に違反する」として７人全員に無罪を言い渡しました。
１審の９か月後、最高裁判所大法廷は、「日米安全保障条約はわが国の存立に関わる高度の政治性を有し、司法審査の対象外だ」として１５人の裁判官の全員一致で１審判決を取り消しました。
今回見つかった文書は、最高裁判決の４か月前の昭和３４年８月、アメリカ大使館から国務長官宛に送られた公電です。
元大学教授の布川玲子さんがアメリカの国立公文書館に請求して初めて開示されました。
文書には、当時の最高裁の田中耕太郎長官が最高裁での審理が始まる前にレンハート駐日首席公使と非公式に行った会談の内容が記されています。
この中で田中長官は、「裁判官の意見が全員一致になるようにまとめ、世論を不安定にする少数意見を回避する」などと語り、全員一致で１審判決を取り消すことを示唆していました。
文書には、田中長官の発言に対するアメリカ大使館の見解として、「最高裁が１審の違憲判決を覆せば、安保条約への日本の世論の支持は決定的になるだろう」というコメントも書かれていました。
会談当時は、日米両政府の間で、安保条約の改定に向けた交渉が行われている最中で、アメリカ軍の駐留を違憲とした１審判決に対する最高裁の判断が注目されていました。
文書を分析した布川さんは、「最高裁長官が司法権の独立を揺るがすような行動を取っていたことに非常に驚いている。安保改定の裏で、司法の政治的な動きがあったことを示す資料として注目される」と話しています。

専門家「文書は大きな意味」
日米外交史が専門で、東洋英和女学院大学教授の増田弘さんは、文書に記録された内容がやりとりされた背景について、「アメリカ政府は、翌年１月に安保改定を控え、在日アメリカ軍が違憲だという法的判断を認めるわけにはいかなかった。また、経済成長を重視し、軽武装でいきたい当時の日本政府にとっても在日アメリカ軍に依存する必要があった」と分析しています。
そのうえで田中長官の発言については、「翌年の１月より前に１審判決を退けてもらいたいというアメリカの要望にも配慮しながら、そのような動きをしていたと考えられる」と指摘しています。
増田さんは、１審判決を取り消したその後の最高裁の判断は、「日米の安全保障における重大な分岐点であり、文書は非常に大きな意味を持つと思う」と話しています。
また、憲法学が専門の早稲田大学の水島朝穂教授は「司法のトップが１審判決を取り消す見通しを事前に伝え、少数意見も出ないよう全員一致を目指すと約束するなど、ここまでアメリカに追随していたかとあぜんとした。司法の独立が放棄されており、さらなる解明が必要だ」と話しています。

　昭和３４年でもまだ、これだもんね。いまだって、どれだけ、介入されていることやら・・・

The Telegraph dubbed her “the ultimate feminist icon” while in Slate, Lionel Shriver recalled her “muscular feminism.” It was an unusual assessment of a woman who once said, “I owe nothing to women’s lib. The feminists hate me, don’t they? And I don’t blame them. For I hate feminism. It is poison.” Yet the persistent notion seems to be – sure, she was reviled to such an extent that people wrote songs wishing for her demise, but hey, she got a lot of attention and she was successful in a man’s world, so … partial victory, ladies?

I’m going to go with a “no, thanks” on that one. I felt much the same way in 2008, shuddering when a female friend declared that even if Obama didn’t win, we’d have a woman as a vice president ― and isn’t that an advancement for women? (Spoiler: It is not.) Women in leadership who are frighteningly bad leaders are not a win for the team. A lady – any lady, like, say, the one who helped cripple labor unions and led her nation to record-breaking childhood poverty – is not now or ever will be cause for any sentence starting with the phrase, “Say what you will about her but…” something something feminism.
