Is violence against women a big problem in Japan?

By JACKIE HOFFART

Florence N. Smith
Teacher/photog., 36 (U.S.)
Absolutely. I recently read that one in five Japanese women have suffered violence or the threat of violence from the men in their lives.

John Henville
Teacher, 27 (Canadian)
I think unchecked, overt sexism here is a leading cause of aggression towards women. I'm troubled to think of how much violent crime against women goes unreported.

Makiko Ando
Trading, 33
Besides physical abuse, many people in Japan are not aware of the issue of mental abuse. There should be more opportunities for women to learn how to protect their own dignity and security.

Veronika Racmonova
Finance (Czech)
I feel much safer here than in Prague, but if there is one big problem I think it's that women here behave according to men's expectations rather than their own feelings.

Michiel Oostindie
Engineer, 30 (Dutch)
I think if you compare Japan to other countries ― like Mexico, for example ― it's not that bad here. The women I know don't complain or seem to have any signs of problems.

Kaori Ito
Child care, 28
I know someone who was a victim of domestic violence. For victims, there should be more in place than just shelters. I think that's one of many big problems in Japan.

Petrina

I met Petrina and her daughter in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Petrina lives with her three children in a women's shelter, and her husband stays at a men's shelter on the other side of town.

Families having to split up is often common in homeless services, and can be a road block to families accepting services. Unfortunately, in communities where there is no family specific shelter the only options are remain homeless or split up.

Social assistance provides this family with $688 a month, which makes it challenging to rent an apartment. Daycare is also an issue. The cost of daycare is the reason Petrina had to drop out of school and often becomes a barrier to finding employment.

Rise In Homeless Female Vets Tied To Military Sexual Abuse
First Posted: 8/17/11 08:37 AM ET Updated: 8/17/11 09:15 AM ET

The number of homeless female veterans is on the rise and the high rate of Military Sexual Assault may be partly to blame.

Between 2008 and 2009, women veterans made up 7.5 percent of the estimated 75,609 homeless service members, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs. The same organization found that 20 percent of of female Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have experienced Military Sexual Abuse, a trauma that is more likely to impede a veteran’s transition back to society, than a combat-related trauma, according to a 2009 Clinical Psychology Review study, the Portland Monthly cited.

"I think I can say confidently that every single woman in the military has dealt with sexual harassment at some time in their career," Mickiela Montoya, a homeless veteran, told ABC. Montoya, who served as a policewoman in Iraq for seven years said a fellow soldier threatened to rape her in Iraq.

Jo's Question: My ex and I have split custody of our children, but he has denied me access to my son for 7 years. He is now 12 yrs old and I have attempted to have contact with him, but his dad refuses. He has told our son that his current wife is his mother and there is no trace in his life of me ever existing. Statistics of a Fatherless America

Cool Dad of the Week: Among fathers who maintain contact with their children after a divorce, the pattern of the relationship between father-and-child changes. They begin to behave more like relatives than like parents. Instead of helping with homework, nonresident dads are more likely to take the kids shopping, to the movies, or out to dinner. Instead of providing steady advice and guidance, divorced fathers become "treat dads."

Older's not wiser: While 57 percent of unwed dads with kids no older than two visit their children more than once a week, by the time the kid's seven and a half, only 23 percent are in frequent contact with their children.

Dadless years: About 40 percent of the kids living in fatherless homes haven't seen their dads in a year or more. Of the rest, only one in five sleeps even one night a month at the father's home. And only one in six sees their father once or more per week.

Measuring up? According to a 1992 Gallup poll, more than 50 percent of all adults agreed that fathers today spend less time with their kids than their fathers did with them.

Russell Armstrong’s attack on estranged wife and fellow Real Housewives of Hollywood star Taylor Armstrong was not the first time he had beat up on a woman. Apparently, he was also known to hit his children in anger.

In court documents dug up by Entertainment Tonight, Russell Armstrong’s ex-wife Barbara Fredrickson claimed the late reality star “hit me … kicked me … blackened my eyes … threw crystal drinking glasses at me … and spit on me.”

The restraining order which she took out on Russell Armstrong on August 20, 2004, runs to 43 pages.

The bombshell allegations that Armstrong not only beat both his wives and his children from his first marriage come just one day after we brought you the photos of Taylor Armstrong (40) with a black eye and bruised forehead, also courtesy of Entertainment Tonight. The photo, taken in an LA hospital, dates from just a few weeks before Russell’s suicide.

Apparently, Russell Armstrong didn’t stop at beating women, either. Fredrickson stated in the court documents that he also slapped their then 6-year-old son Aiden in the face and violently shook him. Aiden was allegedly so scared of his father that he would vomit before visiting with him.

In the court paperwork, Aiden is quoted as saying, “Daddy Russell hit me in the face

PLANT CITY --

Many readers shared their comments online following the Sept. 18 slaying of Beatrice Ann "Bea" Dickey, a 44-year-old mother who was found beaten to death in the master bedroom of her Walden Lake home.

Dickey, a member of St. Clement Catholic Church and the Polk County Sheriff's Office's highest-ranking civilian employee, died at Tampa General Hospital, where she was flown for treatment.

Dickey and her 44-year-old husband, Lawrence, had just returned home from a night out, when she was attacked with an aluminum baseball bat, according to an arrest report. He was charged with first-degree murder in his wife's death and was being held last week without bail at Hillsborough County Jail.

JACKSON COUNTY -- A Pascagoula man arrested on felony charges is accused of severely beating his ex-girlfriend and setting fire to her car, Sheriff Mike Byrd said Tuesday.
“We got a call about her, and she collapsed in an officer’s arms,” Byrd said Tuesday, adding that the suspect, identified as Francisco Barragan, 29, of Pascagoula, had searched for the woman until he found her Monday.
Sheriff’s deputies initially got a call about a vehicle, later identified as the woman’s car, on fire near the Executive Inn on U.S. 90 on Monday morning.

Barragan
Sheriff’s deputies later found the woman severely beaten in the area of Pecan Road. The sheriff said she’d also been strangled during the assault. She was taken to Singing River Hospital, where she was in stable condition Tuesday.

Nevada First in Domestic Violence Murders

POSTED: SEP 21, 2011 8:38 AM
UPDATED: SEP 21, 2011 2:30 PM

LAS VEGAS -- More women are killed in domestic violence incidents in Nevada than in any other state in the country. According to the Violence Policy Center's Report, Nevada has been first four out of five years. The numbers were released ahead of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Domestic violence victim Mona Bowers has her self-esteem back and is sharing her heartbreaking story so others can escape.

"He beat me on my wedding night. Every day, you'd come home. You never knew if you were going to get beaten or not. He'd throw you down a flight of stairs. He'd pull you by the hair of the head and keep kicking you," she said. "People don't understand the thing of domestic violence. You see, these men, they beat you and beat you until you feel worthless, and they kill your self-esteem."

Bowers says in 1974, her young son became a victim to the horror at home.

"He kicked him and kicked him and kicked him, and knocked him all over the house," Bowers said. "I said, ‘Why?' Because, the little boy asked for a donut and his father said no. So, the little boy had to take a beating."

Lack of Protection for Un-Married Women
A woman who complained to the Ankara Judiciary because of domestic violence was denied protection because she was not married officially but religiously and thus did not fall under the scope of the "Law on the Protection of the Family".

Ankara - BİA News Center 27 September 2011, Tuesday

30-year-old female A.A. from Ankara was beaten by her husband Emin K. when she refused to give him the money she earned as a waitress. The marriage of the couple was not officially registered but carried out by an imam, the worship leader of a mosque. The young woman took her four-year-old daughter and went to hospital. Subsequently, she applied to the police station in her neighbourhood.
A.A. went to the Ankara Courthouse and filed a criminal complaint at the prosecution. She was then sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute to obtain a medical report.
According to the press, A.A. explained the violence she experienced in her complaint and said that Emin K. told her "I will not surrender to the police before I have not killed you".
The young woman submitted the medical report on the results of the violence she had been imposed to the prosecution.
She waited for the decision together with her daughter when she was informed that the court was not entitled to take a precautionary decision since she was married religiously and not officially and thus did not fall under the scope of Law No.4320 on the "Protection of the Family".

North America

In 2001, Dr. Richard Estes and Dr. Neil Alan Weiner estimated that in the U.S., 162,000 U.S. homeless youth are child prostitutes (CVE) and that 57,800 children in homes (including public housing) are estimated to be victims of CVE. They also estimated that 30% of shelter youth and 70% of homeless youth are victims of CVE in the United States.[23] One third of street-level prostitutes in the U.S. are under 18 years old while fifty percent of off-street prostitutes are less than 18 years old.[23] Off-street prostitution includes massage parlors, strip clubs, and escort services. According to Estes and Weiner, 12 to 14 is the average age of entry into prostitution for girls under 17 years old in the United States while the average age of entry into prostitution is between 11 and 13.[23]
A study by Unicef Mexico and the DIF/National System for Integral Family Development estimated that more than 16,000 children in Mexico were involved in prostitution (in June 2000);[24] a 2004 study by researcher Elena Azaola estimated that some 17,000 children under the age of 18 are victims of the sex trade in Mexico;[25] the State System of Integral Family Development (DIF) reported that more than 20,000 minors were victims of child prostitution in Mexico in 2005, an increase since the year 2000.[26] Out of Mexico City’s 13,000 street children, 95% have already had at least one sexual encounter with an adult (many of them through prostitution).[27]
