Dear Friends of Mercy Hands,
Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your great moral support to Mercy Hands.
Maybe some of you are not aware of the intricacy of Iraqi context and the hardship of living, not to mention working, in Iraq nowadays, particularly n Baghdad .
People wake up in the morning not knowing if they would survive another day or not, with this daily violence and terror. The sounds of hatred and extremism prevail over all other sounds. Everyone is a target, by a hidden enemy, and might die in any street at any corner in any moment. Sometimes people wonder ¡Èhow could Mercy Hands work and succeed in delivering humanitarian assistance under such unfavorable conditions in such intricate context?¡É, ¡ÈFrom where do MH members get the strength to face death and defy all unfavorable conditions to help disaster affected populations?¡É
The answer is the same to all such questions: We don¡Çt fear death because we know death is an imminent fact to all human beings; but we fear dying helpless, we fear dying without achievements, without leaving behind a trace that would immortalize our names. And what could immortalize ourselves, and glorify our names, more than self-sacrifice and burning out for humanity!?
Actually, we could not develop such perspective about life and death without following role models from history and present times. Some of those role models have lived all their lives in unfavorable settings similar to Iraq but the best role models are people who have relatively normal life but have chosen to quit this life and get involved in assisting people in need living in unfavorable settings. We are inspired by those people to hold strong to our humanitarian beliefs and we shall always be thankful for them. Indeed, all Friends of Mercy Hands are role models and a source of inspiration for us, especially Kyoko san.
Kyoko san, your name shall not be forgotten by all MH members and by others.
Eighteen women are working in Mercy Hands and they always look for women role models for them to nourish their courage and carry on their risky jobs. I am sure our eighteen women, beside our men, would put you ahead of all other women role models for your extreme courage.
In and for peace,
Khaldoon
Mercy Hands
