アジアの平和や発展に尽くした個人や団体に贈られるマグサイサイ賞に、
カンボジアで内戦や虐殺の歴史を乗り越えて世界遺産「アンコール遺跡群」
の修復や保全などに尽力した、上智大学の石澤良昭教授が選ばれました。
マグサイサイ賞は、毎年、アジアの平和や発展に尽くした個人や団体に贈られ、
「アジアのノーベル賞」とも呼ばれていて、過去には、貧困や飢餓に苦しむ人
たちの救済に生涯をささげたマザー・テレサや、チベット仏教の最高指導者、
ダライ・ラマ１４世などが受賞しています。
アンコールワットと言えば、
アメリカのラネー先生、この６月、17年ぶりに日本に立ち寄って、
自分のブログに「腰の曲がったお婆ちゃんが歩道を闊歩していた」と
異文化体験をレポートしてました。
その後、日本からインドネシアへ、昔の教え子の家々をホームステイ。
続いてカンボジアへ、アンコールワット見物へ。
アンコールワットで困った。
I spent the day visiting the first 6 of the amazingly huge Angkor Wat complex, one of the wonders of the world. My non-English speaking tuk tuk(motorcycle rickshaw) left me at the west entrance. I started in and immediately needed to find a toilet. Well, someone told me that it was a kilometer beyond the east entrance. I got to the central stupa and the hordes of Chinese tourists turned around and went back. I decided to go on (with a similarity goal-minded European couple). I also realized that I didn't really know if my driver would be at the east or the west. Well, he wasn't,t at the east, and neither was the toilet. We took a tuk tuk down a road to that and the driver took me back to the west via the north gate. I didn't see my driver at either! He took me back to the toilets and suggested I walk to the west. This was actually lovely and quiet, but no driver! Another nice backpacking couple let me share their tuk tuk back to the toilets and the driver put me on the back of a police motorcycle! Of course I was wearing a skirt so rode side-saddle as the

走り去ってしまった。
去ってすぐに、急に強い尿意が・・・
誰かが、トイレは東の入り口を1㎞も超えた所だと教えてくれた。
そこからトイレ探しに奔走した。
途中でヨーロッパ人とも出会い一緒に探すも、
TukTukの運転手は東の入口にいるのか西の入口にいるのか分からず、
最後は警察のバイクの後ろに、スカートを履いた私が・・・・

At the temples you need to hire a driver for the full day
to take you around...not just for a drop off at the gates.
All the tuk-tuks offer a daily rate....it is odd she didn't know
this or know how much walking would be involved. Some people hire bicycles.
Our driver stayed with us the whole day...
He gave me his phone number and I hired him again the next day to take me to outlying temples...

入口で降りるだけでなく、あなたを連れて行くことができます。
すべてのtuk-tuk運転手は寺院の地図で回り方を説明しますよ。
....それを彼女が知らなかったことは奇妙ですね・・・
一部の人々は自転車を借りて巡ります。
私たちの運転手は一日中私たちと一緒にいました
運転手は私に彼の電話番号を教えてくれました。
私は翌日も同じ運転手を雇いました。
