「控えめ」
文脈にもよりますが、ざっくり行くと、「控えめな人」ならmodest ,be not pushy 「控えめな意見」ならreserved ,polite 「数量規模装飾が控えめ／味が控えめ／意見天気が穏やか」ならmoderate, mildでしょうか。
そもそも英語では「控えめな」は褒め言葉にはならない上に、日本語の「控えめ」には複数の意味もあり難しいですね。
humble 良く知られたhumbleですが要注意した方が良いみたいです。話言葉ではあまり使われないですし、"in my humble opinion"では自虐的に自分を落として強い主張をする、笑いを誘う感じの表現になる事もあります。
modest : 物に使うと（悪い意味での）「質素な」「味気ない」「そこそこの」など、総じて「クオリティーが低い」「クオンティティが低い」になる事もあります。
reserved: 「意見を差し控える」というのが根底あるので、人に使うと「よそよそしい」「裏がある」になる事もあります。

「控えめ」
文脈にもよりますが、ざっくり行くと、「控えめな人」ならmodest ,be not pushy 「控えめな意見」ならreserved ,polite 「数量規模装飾が控えめ／味が控えめ／意見天気が穏やか」ならmoderate, mildでしょうか。
そもそも英語では「控えめな」は褒め言葉にはならない上に、日本語の「控えめ」には複数の意味もあり難しいですね。
humble 良く知られたhumbleですが要注意した方が良いみたいです。話言葉ではあまり使われないですし、"in my humble opinion"では自虐的に自分を落として強い主張をする、笑いを誘う感じの表現になる事もあります。
modest : 物に使うと（悪い意味での）「質素な」「味気ない」「そこそこの」など、総じて「クオリティーが低い」「クオンティティが低い」になる事もあります。
reserved: 「意見を差し控える」というのが根底あるので、人に使うと「よそよそしい」「裏がある」になる事もあります。
