Sorry Japanese only!

Tried pike fly, as it seemed like work well at last time, however it only scared cats. Got a bite on
pink frog popper and missed it, another skunk day. So many cats, but they were not active at all.
Why not?

After just about three hour sleep, I was on my way to Miura to hit Mahi today on Sagami
bay. A small and personally owned fly shop is located near IKEA, 5 minutes drive from Kohoku
IC of Daisan-Kehin near Ikea usually charter a Mahi boat 2 -3 times during the season. The
young owner is a FFF casting instructor and an avid fly fisher. It's strange but most fly shop
is something like for high class or advanced fisher, which actually I hate, but since his shop
concept is from beginner to advance, he would be very happy to have novice customers.
Both casting and fishing lesson are available depend on customers request. Despite I am
a very small and stingy buyer he was so kind to invite me to fish on his charter boat today.

At four thirty in the morning, we gathered at jetty and on board before the sunrise. Weather
was so good, a little bit swells, but no wind and it seemed like we were heading to the Payao,
which is a big buy chained from sea bottom and where the food chain occurs. You know where
small fish come, where big fish come. It's easy to find and plenty of Mahi are there but since
the season began every day hundreds of boat hit these Payaos and they are not easy to fool.
Live bait chumming is very important, even if they would not bite lures or flies you can make
them crazy to feed live bait. Anchovy and sardine are main live baits for Mahi, but this season
not much live baits are available. We had to use them carefully and not to waste.

Lures first, splash and pop on surface, fast retrieve to attract fish. Yes, fish were up, starting
water spray and chumming, it's fly and party time! Hit water like thrown live bait and move it
under spraying water, then you will get a big bite, fish dance, line dance, you dance on around
the boat with fish. Unfortunately the party was very short, fish would not up again and we had
to start wondering to look for birds, floating objects, current rip.

As we heard, this season is very slow since it has started. Mainly small fish 50 - 60 cm, some
70+ or bigger but big fish we like to fight, over a meter was hardly landed, because of water
temp? Anyway we hit here and there, fish were aggressively bite while chumming live baits.
But soon it got slow and went away when we stopped chumming.

Today as fish were not so active, they would not bite on and just under water surface. Sink flies
a little bit, 30 - 40cm using weighted flies was more effective today because fish liked to bite
more. At the last spot, fish were biting but when we were run short of chum not more bite. It's
very simple no chum no bite!

Probably this is like a once in a year summer event for me to fish here at the Kawasaki offshore
breakwater for Kasago, False Kelpfish. This 4 kilometres long offshore breakwater is located
less than a kilometre off Kawasaki container terminal in reclaimed and logistic island and numbered
from one to six by shipping agent. Anglers buy a ticket for the 20 minutes transport at shipping
agent and tell them at jetty when you get on which one you like to get off from the boat to fish.
The summer blue skies told me it's gonna be hot day again, since there's no shade you have
to be well prepared for sunburn. Glaring strong mid August sunshine possibly cause serious sunbrun
or even skin cancer. I got to the jetty quite early. when I was awaiting for the noon boat someone
came and said hello to me. It seemed like he knew me but at first I did not recognise his name.
Shortly our mutual friend came, then I understand who he was. We have been chatted over email
over a year, but never met. The reason I did not recognize his name was quite simple, because
he lives in Hokkaido and I believe no one get to and fish only here long way from Hokkaido, also
he decided to come here after midnight and bought a air ticket just a couple of hours before
departure.

There is only about 3 - 4 avid fly fishers who fish here almost every weekend since season starts.
One of them was already there as he got early boat to fish much longer. He said it's so good
in this morning and landed a 29 cm fish, a kind of trophy fish. After lunch we started to fish and
not very soon, but I got a first bite, it's a lovely small Godzilla face.

On fly, it's kind a deep water fishing, like Grafham water in England for Zander, as water depth,
here is approx 6 - 8 meter about 3-5 meter off breakwater, then it become 10 - 12 meter. The
drop off is where you get bite mostly. Need very heavy shrinking line to deliver you fly to bottom,
I use Rio's T-14 which sinks 9 inches per second, at my count down 40 to 45 counts were best
and enough to deliver my fly to bottom, but of course it's very much depending on water flow.
Mostly short and quick strip, 20 - 30 cm pitch and phase works well but I always have to find what
fish like and where fish like to bite. Once you hooked up, immediately you have to lift you fish from
bottom, otherwise fish back to there nest where in surrounded by obstacles and never out again.

35℃ in the after noon, no shade, it's simply too hot to fish at inside, as outside wall was protecting
southern wind. Outside you had to fish at only about 60cm width concrete wall top from 5 - 6
meter directly water. Fish were mostly aggressive, probably two cast a fish. You know we really
to not know what's happening in water when fish take but it's a good fun to imagine, feel current,
bottom and fish take, imagination, feeling and sixth sense fishing.
As usual before the dusk was so nice, but once it got dark only a few bites in about one hour. After
meal I tied a bit more and got a bite and it's enough for today. You know it's always good to fish with
friends and new fried, hope to see you here or in Hokkaido next year, hahaha.

Cats research, we tried upper stretch of the river a couple of kilometres from my regular spot.
It's a junction pool, mostly very shallow and some knee depth. The flow was strong, it seemed
not a good pool for cats. Soon, my buddy got a bite on his Pike fly about 20cm length, unfortunately
it was loosen in a few second. Cats in fast flow shallow water looked very aggressive, however
they would not like my popper.

nearly on. My buddy got seven bites all together, seems like cats like pike flies, do they?

After Risshu, our traditional calendar says Autumn has come, but temperature here in
Tokyo and Yokohama is still nearly or over 35℃in the day and 25℃ at night, it feels like
still mid summer. We got to our favourite spot for rocks after high tide. Surprisingly, there's
many bait anglers on Wednesday night and red and green lighting float indicators were
drifting with current or wind.

Not like last time, not much noctilucae and we could not see any fish. Over one hour was
very slow, I only could land a couple of fish with very slow strip after 15 - 20 count down.
Then just after ten, the current started flowing from my left to right and pushing intermediate
fly line. Noctilucae started coming. Yes, the happy time had come, fish started biting. Nearly
thirty minutes fish were very aggressive and biting here and there. I used my rockfish flies,
as usual, but my buddies fished by trout flies #18- 20 Griffith's Gnat and #16 -18 Gold bead
head Hare's Ear which amazingly worked well.

The bow and arrow cast is probably well known casting technique by most of flyfisher but
I think only a few percentage of them have actually tried and fished using this technique.
The is a short line cast which is very effective in short range and useful for really covered
area. Welcome to the bushy, overgrown and trickled mountain creek tour for Iwana.
When we got to the first creek, luckily the gate was open same as a few weeks ago, because
of weir constriction. The creek up and down the weir was miserably naked, trees were cut
rock were removed and they even put sandbags to broke water flow for easy constriction.

Anyway, we stated to fish just up there where is usually very productive and fish are very
aggressive. As we imagined after Obon holiday, we saw pretty new footprints here and there
which meant big fishing pressure and the worst case was no fish left. No good at all, but luckily
still fish were there and bit our flies even in ankle depth water.

As usual, when we got to the junction, we got in to the tributaries and found fish were very
aggressive. probably no one fished since my last visit. Fish were in each very small pool and
aggressively bit our flies. I missed a big bite but we saw a few nice fish in big pool.

After lunch we moved to the next creek, unfortunately someone there and we headed to the
other creek. On the way up the creek I carefully checked all parking spot, luckily no one there,
of course we never knew if someone fished in this morning. At the beginning it's very slow and
a lot of footprints but my buddy missed a big bite an he saw 40cm+ fish at the weir. After about
one hour and half, finally fish started biting. We fished one more creek at evening for about an
hour and that's all for today.

The famous Fuji Five Lakes is the name of the area located at the base of Mt Fuji in Yamanashi
which is a day trip distance for people live in Tokyo and Yokohama. The lake Kawaguchiko is
one of this Fuji Five Lakes and there are so many tourist attractions around, not only fishing
but also water sports are very popular in this lake. The lake used be very good trout lake, of
course, it's stocked fish, but now it's Black bass, hold a couple of professional bass tournament.

We waked up quite early as we wanted to start fishing before sunrise. At the first spot my set
up was floating line, with black Cherno Ant, but the lake as unexpectedly weedy and soon I
found it must be weed guard flies as I believed bass stay in weed pockets and edges for hunting.
When first bite was when the green grass hopper was moving on thick weeds, it's not a firm
bite. The second bite was very clear and firm bite when I was shaking fly on a small weed pocket.
I thought it's a small bass, but was a good Bluegill.
Then I found a bunch of baby bass in and out the weed pockets near a small jetty. I tried to
fool them whatever I have, but they only came close to see my flies, never bit.

We gave up here and moved to the inlet where power plant water comes in. It looked like quite
popular and busy, as there's nearly ten angler from shore and a couple of more from boat. As
you know strong water flow from power plant cause lots of oxygen which is very important in
high water temperature season. I saw bass, Oikawa (Freshwater minnow), Hasu (Tree-lips) and
Nigoi (Barbel steed). A lure guy landed a bass when we got there, it seemed like fish were biting.
I tried to hook up Hasu, but they would not bit, then I found a Nigoi on sallow bed. Slowly I got
closer and delivered a nymph, a soft take, then I hooked up.

No bass, but never mind I should back here again soon.

This weekend very unusually I originally had not planned anything, as my wife said to me she
was going to use our car for a couple of days. All of sudden, the luck an invitation came and
on Friday night I was sitting on the passenger sheet of German speedster, Porsche on my
way to a gorgeous country villa in Lake Yamanaka forest. Traffic was really bad as Obon holiday
had just started, everyone was on their way to their parests' home or just family travel. A
few hours later than we originaly schedluled, we got to the villa, and grabbed a glass full fine
Scotch wiskey.

Since we were up very late with Scotch wiskey and Olympic game, we only were able to start
to fish after lunch. At upper stretch parking, we saw a bunch of lure guys. I thought it's going
to be a very busy day as usual, however when we parked right middle of the fishery and walked
to the creek we found less anglers. almost empty. Probably some sort of lure fishing school
was held at upper stretch. Anyway, I had never fished like this empty fishery before.

Later I landed a really good and beautiful brownie, 40cm+. It got muddy when I was going to
take photos. So I waded in water and was washing it, then it had slipped from my hands before
taking photos, haha.

At the dusk, it's a kind of big surprise as I saw a few of big caddis hatching in middle of August,
and fish was aggressively bit flies.

After fishing, it's another happy time, nice food and beers with friends.

At the arrival, it's very slow, maybe as it's high tide and water flow was too slow. When the
moon rose, tide changed and started to flow to left, noctiluca came and fish started aggressively
rising and biting. I set up intermediate line today and fish mostly bit within 10 meter from shore.

August has come, Mahi have come. As you know Japan is surrounded with very rich seas
and even about a few hours drive from Tokyo we can hit blue water spices such as Mahi,
Tuna and Bonito as they come to Kanto area in Summer with "KUROSHIO", the Japan
current which is a north flowing warm ocean current.

Old boys, welcome on board!! Actually we were very much worried about weather since we
heard two typhoons were heading from south Philippine Sea to Japan. Luckily both were not
going to attack right middle of Japan and we were able to be on board at before the dawn on
Saturday morning.

Seeing Mt Fuji on our left and sunrise on back, we were heading south west to look for birds,
floating objects and current rip where bait fish and predators are. It took us nearly two hours
to the first spot, at first we started teasing by lure, soon I hooked up a first fish on popper.
When you hook up a Mahi, usually a bunch of Mahi follow it. So while you are playing with hooked
Mahi near the boat, your buddy cast fly to fool following Mahi. As it should be, immediately
my buddy hooked his first ever Mahi and landed.

Due to Typhoon and wind, swell waves 1.5 - 2.5 meter annoyed us to fish, it's very hard to
fish especially on the bow. We could find a bunch of birds were flying and calmly resting on
the sea surface, as same as birds, fish were not active, only a few of Mahi chased lure and
we sometimes could hooked up some of them.

When Mahi were aggressive it's very easy to hook up, as they strike heard then run like rocket,
but if not just bite and spit it immediately. They would not like to bite flies on top and subsurface,
sinking line with heavy dumbbell eye fly was effective today.

Even this condition. luckily some of small Mahi were aggressive and everyone on board hooked
up and landed a few fish each on lure and fly.

After fishing, we enjoyed seafood lunch at Numazu seafood market. Guys, hopefully see you
again in Autumn to chase fatty bonito here.
