Baku, Azerbaijan again!! I have been googling to find anything about fly fishing in Baku or
Azerbaijan and have visited a few tackle shops at my last trip, however nothing came up,
moreover a tackle shop guy tried to sell a landing net to catch a flying fish. Here in Baku,
they have no idea what fly fishing is and never seen it. One day our local staff told me he
knows a guy who is an avid bait angler often fish at Caspian sea and around Baku. Lat night
we chatted over a few beers a day and promised to fish this evening after work.
The Caspian sea near Baku city central is unfortunately very oily and smelly. There's a beautiful
park along the sea which is very close to the downtown, great place for local to relax and for
tourist but it seems like prohibited to fish because of polis as locals say.

The fish he usually catches is called Kutum (Caspian Kutum) in Azerbaijani and same as Russian,
a kind of Dace or Chub like brackish water fish. What they use to catch this fish is bread so we
bought a round shape local bread on the way to the spot. It took nearly one hour to the spot
because of heavy traffic. As I head, waders on walk through the shallow sandy beach to the
small islands, where are usually very productive. We saw a bunch of anglers who were hurry to
back home with their harvest.

The brackish water sandy shallow beach we cross, you know, Caspian Sea water is less salt
content even it's called as sea was our chest high and we had to walk carefully, sudden waves
and trap like rocks in water, following the route where locals were walking was the best idea.

After a bit walk we got to the spot he usually fish and showed me how to set bead on hooks.
Cast it as far as possible and wait to fish bite it. It seemed very easy as we use real bait and
saw a bunch of fish in local's net, however we could not get any bite for a whole.

Winds were picking up and about half an hour left as the sun was setting, so we decided to make
a move where a bunch of locals were fishing. Immediately we knew this was the right decision
as we saw guy at our left and right landed a fish when we got there. Soon I and my buddy got
a bite but we both missed it. As he said the bite was very light and we had to move immediately
when we felt its bite. The second bite was very clear even winds were more and more picking
up and luckily I could land my first ever Caspian fish.

Just a second later, my buddy landed a bit bigger fish. We tried when it got nearly dark, but no
more luck.

Thanks a lot my frined!! I really enjoyed a evening fishing with you, hope to see you again soon.
After fishing I googled what we got today and found they eat shrimp and crab, so maybe I have
to try it on fly at my next trip.
