Baku, Azerbaijan again!! I have been googling to find anything about fly fishing in Baku or
Azerbaijan and have visited a few tackle shops at my last trip, however nothing came up,
moreover a tackle shop guy tried to sell a landing net to catch a flying fish. Here in Baku,
they have no idea what fly fishing is and never seen it. One day our local staff told me he
knows a guy who is an avid bait angler often fish at Caspian sea and around Baku. Lat night
we chatted over a few beers a day and promised to fish this evening after work.

The Caspian sea near Baku city central is unfortunately very oily and smelly. There's a beautiful
park along the sea which is very close to the downtown, great place for local to relax and for
tourist but it seems like prohibited to fish because of polis as locals say.

The fish he usually catches is called Kutum (Caspian Kutum) in Azerbaijani and same as Russian,
a kind of Dace or Chub like brackish water fish. What they use to catch this fish is bread so we
bought a round shape local bread on the way to the spot. It took nearly one hour to the spot
because of heavy traffic. As I head, waders on walk through the shallow sandy beach to the
small islands, where are usually very productive. We saw a bunch of anglers who were hurry to
back home with their harvest.

The brackish water sandy shallow beach we cross, you know, Caspian Sea water is less salt
content even it's called as sea was our chest high and we had to walk carefully, sudden waves
and trap like rocks in water, following the route where locals were walking was the best idea.

After a bit walk we got to the spot he usually fish and showed me how to set bead on hooks.
Cast it as far as possible and wait to fish bite it. It seemed very easy as we use real bait and
saw a bunch of fish in local's net, however we could not get any bite for a whole.

Winds were picking up and about half an hour left as the sun was setting, so we decided to make
a move where a bunch of locals were fishing. Immediately we knew this was the right decision
as we saw guy at our left and right landed a fish when we got there. Soon I and my buddy got
a bite but we both missed it. As he said the bite was very light and we had to move immediately
when we felt its bite. The second bite was very clear even winds were more and more picking
up and luckily I could land my first ever Caspian fish.

Just a second later, my buddy landed a bit bigger fish. We tried when it got nearly dark, but no
more luck.

Thanks a lot my frined!! I really enjoyed a evening fishing with you, hope to see you again soon.
After fishing I googled what we got today and found they eat shrimp and crab, so maybe I have
to try it on fly at my next trip.

2013-05-19 | Trip: Asia

A fright from Istanbul to Dhaka was probably the worst fright I have ever flew, was a horrible
night mare. More over this seven days trip was definitely the worst business trip in my life, three
nights at hotel and four nights on airplane, vested four cites, Istanbul, Ankara, Dhaka and the last
destination Singapore. Singapore is not a favorite destination for a fly fisher who think too much
people and artificial to fish. Yes, they are right and probably its better to enjoy exotic food and
atmosphere. As you know, street foods in Singapore are the best in the world. If you have enough
time probably you can hire boat and enjoy saltwater fly fishing, such as Mahi, Barracuda, Queen
fish are waiting for you. When I saw my schedule I found six hours to the next fright at Singapore
and as you know what I do was fishing just like I have fished in Singapore a few years ago, when
I fished at the world famous Sailfish heaven, Kuala Rompin, Malaysia, as Singapore Changi airport
is the gate way to the heaven.

On the other hand over night fright from Dhaka to Singapore was very comfortable, picked up
my baggage, change closes and got ready to fish. The way to the first reservoir I chose taxi as
I wanted to be there before sunrise not to miss biting fish. Before rush hour, its very clear and
easy so I got the first spot exactly when I wanted. Tried small flies as fist with intermediate line,
no bite, too dark to get a bite? Set a floating minnow, dreaming to get a big bite, no, nothing.
A bit later when it started bright fish became aggressive, the action had started, the most exciting
moment whenever you fish. They were chasing and biting something, it seemed like some good
fish in a bunch of biting fish, however they would not bit floating minnow. Quickly set small flies
again with intermediate and immediately I got a first bite of the day. but all of sudden it came loose
when I was about to land it. Then next bite, it came off just after the bite. The third and the last
bit, luckily a baby peacock was on well maintained grass shore. I knew I should hook another fish
while they were biting but as it should be while I was taking photos it got quiet and they all gone.

Walked around the reservoir for a while, no action, no fish so I decided to walk to the canal where
we fished our last trip. The water grasses were pretty nice and looked very productive at first but
soon I found water was muddy because of constriction. I saw a couple Tilapia, but no peacock.
Walked up and down along the canal, found a couple of lure guys, a pair of common snakehead
with their fry and a few giant snakehead immediately swam away before I got ready to cast. Found
a good peacock in weeds, soon down into weed jungle and never up again.

When sun was up, it's really hot as it should be and became very slow. Walked to see the lower
reservoir, but soon I gave up even did not wet fly. Found a station near the reservoir, the train was
fairly packed probably because of beginning of the week and just before office work, but less than
one our ride I got to the airport.

After dinner with local guys, backed to hotel and checked internet if there was any pond in Baku.
Found two ponds which were approximately one hour walk, checked on Google satellite and chose
a pond called Qanli gol as it looked very bush which would be good for perch and much better than
the other pond. It's just about one hour walk but not easy to find way down to the pond because
its west side was surrounded thumb and cliff. Saw two angler, there must be some fish Walked
for a while, finally found a way down to the water edge through houses. It's a very bushy pond and
water was skinny.

Clear, fine morning, set a small olive woolly bugger which used to be very effective for small perch
when I fished small ponds in Moscow. Saw a few small fish looked like scud, but no bite. Checked
and tried around for a while, no luck. That's all for my first trip to Baku, Azerbaijan, I need more
info until next visit to hook up a first fish.

2013-04-25 | Trip: Asia

The long over night thirteen hours fright to Istanbul, Turkey, three hours waiting for next
fright to the final destination Baku, Azerbaijan, the far west end of the Asia. This is my first
ever visit to former Soviet union, oil rich CIS country. As usual, whenever and wherever I
go I have checked internet if I can fish around and found my hotel is near the Caspian sea.
According to fish fact, the commercial fishing in the Caspian sea used to very important for
countries around, however over fishing and pollution, especially oil industry and economic
development have caused big decline of fish populations. Black Caviar from Beluga is the
most important for fish industry in Azerbaijan. As for fly fisher, I have interested in Perch,
Pike, Zander and endangered Caspian salmon and packed my six weight Orvis frequent flyer
rod in my luggage if I could fish early morning and hook up a baby perch.

The first day and next morning were stormy weather, lighting and thunder storm, no chance
to even see the sea. In the afternoon, when the weather improved, luckily I could have a bit
time to walk and see the sea. Just about fifteen minutes walk to the Caspian sea from the
hotel and found a bunch of small mullet in oily water along the shore park in Baku. As I did
not see any angler so I asked local co-workers if I can fish there, they did not have right info
but said better not in the park because of police, a big disappointment.

However, I thought very early in the morning there should be no police and I could sneak up
the park to fish a bit so I waked up at six and walked to the park while it's dark. When I got
to the park, surprisingly there were so many local people walking and jogging along the well
maintenance shore walkway.

The big disappointment, the Caspian sea looked dead, because of oil, probably wind direction.
I saw oil yesterday but the water was fully covered by oil and mullets which I saw had gone
away. Walked along the shore for a whole then I backed to the hotel even did not wet fly.

Anyway, I have to be here again and again, so have to find a place to fish.

2012-11-02 | Trip: Asia

Fishing from the American 300 horse power high tech engine boat to the Thai local 1 human
power paddle primitive wooden canoe is like a 200 years long historical trip. Since human being
have started to fish people use wooden canoes which is still the most effective way to approach
to the fishing spots in 21st century. I happened to get a free day in Bangkok during my South
East Asian trip and I contacted with my Thai friend, Oz who speaks perfect English and has started
his own sports fishing business. He runs his new business on web selling lures, shirts, etc and
arrange fishing trip for foreign visitors. He guides you as well.

I used to fish on Pilot 111 when I visit to Bangkok, a very nice fishery but I have been thinking
to fish somewhere out Bangkok to wind fish. His offer was very simple and what I really wanted
so we were together on a wooden canoe to chase wild giantsneak head on Bang Prah reservoir
today. Bang Prah reservoir is located in Chon Buri, South-East of Bangkok, about 1.5 hours
drive.

As first we tried Jungle perch, Hampala macrolepidota, for a whole. The reservoir is manmade
artificial dam and the sink houses became good houses for various fish. We saw a couple of fish
rises and actions but they would not like to bite my flies. So we headed to the heavy cover areas
to chase the Giant snakehead so called Chado in Thai, do not mix up with Japanese Chado the
traditional tea ceremony. November is wet season and controlled water is high, these heavy cover
vegetation areas are great hiding and hunting space for Chado. We hit all suspicious areas and
a few fry on the surface. As you know snakehead parents are with their babies to protect from
other predators. If something scars their babies they immediately attack it. Some snakehead
anglers hate to fish these parents but in Thailand this is a kind of popular way (fry stalking) to
catch it.

In the morning, my guide, Oz got a bite on lure. When fish was under the boat, it came off all
of sudden as the front hook sprit ring was broken. No more bite in the morning.

Local lunch at the beach house was good and it was very strange international day as with an
Australian, a Russian, two Swiss, a Thai, a Half Thai. What a international recover we were
fishing. After a few hours lunch break we stated our afternoon session in 34℃, no shade and
under the glaring sun

Fly casting on narrow wooden canoe in this hot weather was really hard work, even standing
on it is not easy. If you lost your balance it means immediately you are in water. We hit here
and there. Sometimes in the heavy covered area we saw fish scared and ran away, but they
simply would not bite. The sun was setting and our day on the reservoir was end. Even in Thailand
is not easy to catch a wild fish near Bangkok, you see fish are too smart to fool.

Whenever I travel to Thailand and have time the place I fish is the Pilot 111 fishing pond. There's
so many pay ponds in Thailand but I think quality of fish and facility are best for especially lure and
fly fisher. I have been trying to find other place to fish for wild giant snakehead and jungle perch,
however without local guide or friend it's impossible, especially if it's short stay. The way to the Pilot
is very easy, as the mistress of the pond speaks good English, so all you have to do is get a taxi and
call her then you will be there. By over night fright from Tokyo I got to Bangkok early in the morning,
directly headed to the pond. Even in this hot country, early morning is usually good to fish.

I set up my frequent flyer #6, 7 pieces rod with slow sinking line and stickleback fly which worked
very well at last time and clouser minnow. Barramundi was very active in this morning, even on my
first cast fish bit my clouser minnow. Slow strip which I usually do for rockfish was deadly effective,
every cast I got a bit. The attach of Barramundi is very special, it's very sharp and wild. I landed
enough and tried snakehead. No idea why but it's very slow. I spoke with a guy who fished a few days
ago. He said he landed twelve fish at last time and was using exactly same lure but go no bite.

The food is reasonable, mostly hot and spicy, but it's good as you can feel you are in Thailand, hot
weather, hot food and cold beer.

In the afternoon, it got very slow, even Barramundi would not bite so often, but still better than
snakehead. Frequent fly change was necessary, the biting range was 15 count on intermediate
and 10 on slow sinking line.

Luckily I could land the first Paku and the first Asian redtail catfish. It's became too hot and time
to go.

Low 26℃and High 36℃, March, it is just the beginning of Summer in Thailand. People say in
Thailand we have only two seasons, Summer and Hot Summer, that's all. I chatted over with
my local friend and he was so kind to fish together with me at Pilot 111, the most famous
Barramundi and Giant Snakehead spots fishing park in the South East Asia. The fishing park
is pay pond with beautiful local restaurant, you can ask to cook your fish if you like. All meals
and a day fishing are very competitive rate. Fish are very good conditions and difficult to fool
without dead or live bait chumming.

We left Bangkok quite early, out town at the pond it's very nice cool and fresh, as you know
downtown in Bangkok, the air is dead, because of countless and various vehicles, air conditions,
road and building constructions, etc. Anyway we tried Giant Snakehead pond as first. It looks
like fish are very active in the morning as I could see a lot of actions on the surface. For sure
it's not easy as it looked like, I set floating line tried poppers and floating minnows, no bite.
Changed to sinking line with trout gum fly, within a few cast, got a big strike and was a nice
Giant Snakehead.

Watch out for razor sharp fangs!!

Moved to Barramundi pond, soon I got a firm bite and it was a beautiful Spotted Knifefish,
a kind of ancient type fish, for the first fish ever in my life. Sinking line and slow strip as
if we fish for trout and rockfish worked well and Barramundi liked it. Especially fluorescent
green sticklebacks fly which I use for Japanese Huchen in Hokkaido worked well.

Getting really hot in midday, need a long lunch break, local spicy Thai food and a lot of cold
drink and talk and talk. After the break some more fishing and luckily I could land a couple of
more Barramundi.

Anyway, it's a fine day off in Thailand with friend. Thanks Oz!!

We said goodbye to Dominic at Singapore airport. Again left our luggage, then took a taxi and
headed to the Betock reservoir where we were going to meet a Singapore fly fishing nuts who
I have been chatting over months via email. He was the guy who kindly send me a great map
and a perfect guidance for peacock on fly and luckily we could land our first peacock
on Tuesday morning.

Arrived a bit earlier than we promised and tried this Betock reservoir first. But we have not
seen any fish at all, so went to near by cafe. Shortly after our first contact and chat we moved
to the other spots.

Every place we visited was occupied by weekend picnickers, prawn fishers and peacock fishers,
all bait and lure guys. Even we have seen some netting people. He said all those foreign workers
take everything, dose not matter how many or how big, back to home and recent years fishing
has been getting poor and poor. We gave us some very local peacock fly and it worked very well.
Unfortunately we could not fool any big fish, but I really enjoyed it, fishing together with new
and old friend.

After fishing he took us to the shopping centre and we had light meal and drink. Then he was
very kind to send us to then airport. Thank you so much Mel, hope we can fish together in
Zambia or Maldives, haha!!

Anyway, it's all about this Asian fishing trip. I'm already wondering where's the next destination!!

2011-08-26 | Trip: Asia

The very last day of our 3 days Sailfish trip in Kuala Pompin, Malaysia, with big expectation
and big smile we were on board. If no heavy seas we were going to the last spot directory.
You know I do not usually expect too much but if it's like yesterday's condition, the last day
would be another great day.

Windy and a bit heavy seas, a bumpy way to the spot, so we stopped at the second spot we
fished yesterday. This fishing, we, anglers very much rely on boat crews, captain, guide and
teaserman, probably 95% or more. They do their best. Fish raise, they bring angry fish to
the boat then you start your work.

Unlike yesterday, there's no birds no fish at all at this spot. Even though we tried a few hours,
no luck. It's still too heavy seas to go to the other spot. No good, nothing, completely nothing,
so we had early lunch.

Then we moved to the yesterday's last spot where we landed fish. Before yesterday and
yesterday, after lunch seas became flat but today, it's still heavy seas. Had a look around,
big, big disappointment, we saw nothing at all, no birds, no fish. No idea why but everything
had gone. The situations had been totally changed since yesterday.

We tried here and there, wandering around all good spots till the time limit. No luck!!
Anyway it's the end of our three days sailfish trip.

We enjoyed the last dinner at Chinese.

When we arrived we have told, fishing has been very slow in these days and it was really
slow, only one good day and two bad days. In my opinion, it seems like August is still very
much risky and If I have another chance I should fish in October.

This time three days sailfish fishing, including transport from Singapore airport, all fishing
tackles(Rod, Reel, Line, Leader, Fly), all meals, soft drinks and accommodations was 2555SGD
per person. Also guaranteed all day teasing (30 mins lunch break), unconditionally tackle
supply sounds very reasonable and competitive, compared to other Sailfish destinations, but
to be honest it's still quite a bit expensive for me. You know my dough is very tight, haha.

This trip, I was really lucky, got a first sailfish in my life with great buddy, guide and captain.
Thanks everyone, hope someday we can fish together again!!

2011-08-25 | Trip: Asia

The first day we were completely beaten up. We told our very disappointed guide we are
very good at these blank days fishing. We often hear yesterday or last year was good, etc,
etc. Never mind it always happen anywhere in the world and you never know and have no
chance if you do not fish. Anyway, today is the second day and we had breakfast same as
yesterday Chinese and Malaysian mixture.

Today we headed to the north as there's no much fish in south area. Sailfish on fly in Rompin
is world famous destination but it seems like there's only one serious operator on fly who can
trolling/teasing all day long, of course there's 30 minutes lunch break and engine cool down.
While on board all anglers can do is wait and wait. When fish rase to the teaser, the action starts,
teaserman brings fish to the boat, then you cast.

The first fish to the teaser today was Sailfish, attached the left teaser showing its body in
the air and immediately disappeared. Then another one but without playing with teaser it's
gone. Moved the other spot and we found many birds and bait fish. Oh, oh Sailfish too!! It's
first time in my life to see sailfish were calmly cruising around the bait fish proudly showing
its huge sail in the air. Fish raise, perfect teasing, fish was madly chasing the teaser toward
to the boat. Clear the other teaser! Anger ready! Hardly breathe, the heat breaking moment.
Cast, cast! Fly hit the water, first strip and second strip. Big Bang!! Fish took fly and turned
around, screaming reel and jet run! Everyone on boat started screaming like reel. It seemed
like everything went well but... No idea why it's gone. It was almost perfect moment, imagine
first cast, first fish...

Still there's many birds and fish, the second chance fish run a bit but again it's gone, the third
chance fish took fly but immediately spat it out. Two more chance to cast but fish would not
take my fly. Heavy seas and strong wind, it's not easy to control casting, striping on board for
me. After the lunch break we moved to the other spot again.

More birds and more fish, finally the time has come. Fish took my fly and turned around. My
reel started screaming again. But we saw teaser line was tangled with my backing line. when
our guide and teaserman, Dominic cleared the teaser it hit the boat and rebounded to the water,
then it tangled with my line. Dominic tried to untangle it but did not work, so our captain Jerry
came and he calmly untangled it. Fish was still the other end and jumping, dancing all around,
already over 150m away.

Great and strong fish but getting tired, so do I. Fly line in, another 25m away. It's got easier
to control.

Lift, Leard in, Dominic firmly grabbed the leader and the its bill. A beatifull 30kgs fish!!!

Sorry keep you awaiting, still so many fish around and it's just incredible.
Your turn Buddy! He hooked much bigger one!!

What a strong fish!!

Good job, well done my frinds!

Another beauty, the trophy fish 37-38kgs!

Still there's many birds and fish, but time's up. Today we were a bit away from jetty.

Anyway it was a great day, Dominic and Jerry, thank you so much!!

2011-08-24 | Trip: Asia

Backed to the Airport and meet our guide and this tour operator, Dominic. He and Ian run this
fishing tour business and they are actually guiding and teasing by themselves. Way from Singapore
airport to Kuala Rompin, Malaysia is approx 4 hours drive by confirmable air conditioned seven
seaters. Across the border was very smooth, maybe as it's Tuesday afternoon, a bit of jungle
winding road drive we reached to the our dream village Kuala Rompin, the only and the best
Sailfish destination in Asia. There's the big Marine statue in the village, I do not know if it's on
purpose or not, but definiatly Sailfish village.

I heard and knew October is the prime season but even in April it's fully booked. So I was thinking
about to book end September, but could not find a buddy to fish with me. All of sudden an old
friend lives in London send me an email and immediately he became my fishing buddy of this trip
and we decided to go on end August, as also we heard a few years average of fish raise was 40
a day during the second half of August. So, we, two of us have booked 3 full day fishing and 4
night accommodation. Hopefully we can land one each.

Dinner at the Chinese restaurant where we had all breakfast and dinner during our say in the
village near the lodge. Lodge is very clean and comfortable, three twin bed rooms on the second
and living room and kitchen on the first. During and after the dinner Dominic explained us all
about sailfish fishing, teasing, cast, fight, etc, etc.

Next morning, the first day of sailfish on fly!! We filled up on energy to fight!

It's just five minutes to jetty where most of fising boat are. The jetty was quite busy all dreaming
guys from all over the world come to fish for Sail on fly, on lure, on bait.

All these boats here looks same, probably built by same company, but they all have thier favorite
engine, mostly Japanese. Our boat has Honda 150hp and only about 45 minutes we were already
in the first spot. First of all we each did some practice before we start. Clear teaser! Ready!
Cast! Engine neutral! Engine forward!! Can you imagine how we were excited!!

The first visiter to the teaser was Mahi which was very unusual in late August, second one
was also Mahi. It seems like not a good sign for us. After that nothing came up to the teaser
for a couple of hours. When we reached the sport where the border of light and dark skys,
the fisrt sailfish came up to the teaser. It was as if we saw a slow mortion of movies fish came
up and gone. Next fish was almost same, even no chance to cast.

Time's up! The end of the first day, maybe tomorrow!!

Booked my dream trip to Singapore and Malaysia fly on Peacock bass and fly on Sailfish in early
April and finally it has come true. As soon as we arrived Singapore airport, left luggages and
headed to the reservoir by taxi. I have been contacting with a Singapore guy since I decided
this trip and he was so kind to send me a map and fishing instruction and we were planning to
do exactly it says.

The way to the reservoir took as a bid longer than it should be, but you know this would happen
very easily if it is your first visit. But we found where we have to be and started fishing. A few
minutes later we found a small fish school and soon I landed a first peacock in my life. Look at
this size, hahaha!!

Baby peacock, it very aggressive fish. Whenever they see the fly they chase it and take it.
We walked along the reservoir and tried to find a bit bigger fish, but all we could fool were
babies. Actually I saw a few nice fish, 40-50cm and one of them nearly take my fly but...

So as advised we moved to the canal and finally I could land a better size, see still small but
enough for me, hahaha!!

Peacock tail, it's so beautiful!!

My buddy landed a similar size. It's became too hot to fish and we backed to the airport for
next destination.

2011-06-12 | Trip: Asia

Again visit to Bangkok, Thailand, fishing with my friend Oz, a local guy who speaks perfect
English and his beautiful girl friend (unfortunately no mine, haha) and his friend Doc Green
from Florida in fishing pond, near Bangkok. Last time I met up him in Bangkok, due to our
schedule we could not fish together. A night we chatted over a beer and promised we fish
together someday. Some says someday never comes but it comes.

I got the first ever Giant snakehead on fly in my life, it's really aggressive and strong fish, not
like our local Snakehead (RAIGYO in Japanese) which was imported from Korea and Taiwan
in the early 20th for human consumption, but actually now no one eats in Japan and it never
has become commercial valued fish, except short period of just after the Word War second.

It's show time! Guys, watch out these fangs!!

Thanks Oz and Doc, I really enjoyed and it's a great fun to fish together with you.
