海外ニュースと英語、どちらも楽しめるイベント「NEWS de English」を、１０月１２日（日）に開催します！
テーマは「風刺漫画で見る政治」。政治家や、権力者、セレブリティなど、みんなが知っている有名人を風刺したイラストをよく見かけますが、それを見て「クスッ」と笑ったり、考えさせられたり、時には腹が立ったりと、漫画の奥にあるメッセージをしっかり受け止めるには、そのもとになっている事柄を知っている必要があります。ウェイン先生と一緒に、風刺漫画のメッセージをひも解いてみませんか？

"Using Alliteration and Tongue Twisters to Practice Perfect Pronunciation”
So the change of seasons is upon us and it has brought rain, gray skies, and cool breezes. It also brings us seasonal foods like kaki, nabes galore, and of course freshly harvested rice. I love this time of year.
You're probably asking, "What is alliteration?" According to my handy Bloombury Grammar Guide - The Way the English Language Works by Gordon Jarvie, "alliteration" is the "repeating of initial sounds or letters in a sequence of words." Easy, right? Maybe not, so here's an example - "Sally sold seashells by the seashore." This kind of sentence uses alliteration. The part that is alliterative is "Sally sold seashells..." The repetition of the "S" sound is alliteration. We can do it with other letters, for example, "B" - big bad boy; or "Z" - zig zagging zebra; or "T" - topsy turvy turtle; I can go on and on.
I know what you are saying, "Those aren't sentences, and I don't have the vocabulary for that." I hear you and empathize. I often have the same problem when studying Japanese - not enough vocabulary. That said, the more you study the more vocabulary you will gain, so you have to start with studying vocabulary and how to make sentences before using this technique of alliteration. But remember, what I'm talking about is not making sentences for everyday conversation, but making sentences to improve your pronunciation. I go back to Sally and her seashells. Those kind of alliterative sentences are called tongue twisters because they help us with our pronunciation. Sally helped us with "S" and "Sh." Ideally you should start by saying these sentences slowly, and as you are able to pronounce them comfortably you speed up to make it more difficult. The more you do this the more you will see that your reading will improve, your ability to pronounce words in regular conversation will improve and your listening will improve.
Here are some other tongue twisters that might help you out - "A big black bug bit a big black bear;" or "The Pied Piper played his pretty pipe and made all the rats run into the river;" or "The silly scientist said so many silly things his students thought he was stupid." I could go on. Those are long crazy sentences, but you can be simple as well, for example - "The red rabbit runs;" or "The car came close to the corner;" or "Teachers talk too much." Hahaha:)
I challenge you to create your own tongue twister using alliteration. If you want some more ideas plus lesson ideas (for the teachers out there) check out this website -

今回のウェイン先生のコーナーは、ユーモアたっぷりでしたね。英文を読むのに慣れていないと、わからない単語で止まったりしがちです。でも、知らない単語が一行に２個くらいだったら、気にせずどんどん進んで読んでみると、案外あとに続く文章で意味がわかったりするものです。最初は「とばして」読むのが少し気持ちが悪いかもしれませんが、是非挑戦してみて下さい。
もう一つ、声に出して読んでみると、だまって読むよりずっと意味というか、書き手のセンスがつかめるものです。これも是非挑戦してみて下さい。今回は「早口言葉」がテーマでしたので、発音の練習にもなりますよ♪
日中も寒い日が続いています。体に気をつけて、美味しいもの、温かいものを食べて、味覚の秋を思いっきり楽しんで下さい！
