皆さん、Abbreviation（アブリヴィエーション）てご存知ですか？
そう、いわゆる略字のことです。機関名が英語だと長くなることが多々ありますので、単語の頭文字をとって省略した形を作ることがよくあります。たとえばAPEC（エイペック）は、Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation の頭文字ですし、EU は、European Union の略です。
さてここで問題。「BOJ」は、何の abbreviation でしょうか？
正解は・・・
Bank of Japan（日本銀行）です。
もう一つ問題。「FBI」は？
正解は・・・
Federal Bureau of Investigation（連邦捜査局）です。
（ofなどの前置詞は、abbreviationではよく省かれます。もちろん、発音するときや見た目上あると格好がつくというときには、前置詞もabbreviate されることもあります。上のBOJがその例）
もういっちょ！「KY」は？
これは簡単ですね、空気読めないの略。こんなabbreviationもありかな。

なかなかの難問です。分かるかな？
正解は「There Is No Such Thing As a Free Lunch」でした！これは経済学で使う言葉で、「世の中に無料のランチなんてものはない」「どんなささいなことでも、誰かが負担しているのだ」という意味で使われます。
こういうちょっとした事が分かると、ニュースでも雑誌でも、もっと面白くなりますよね。今度abbreviationを見つけたら、是非そのもとの言葉を自分で想像してみてください。ボキャブラリーの勉強になると思います！

"Inspiring People By Example"
Hello friends of the mail mag. I hope this note finds you happy, healthy, and inspired.
On September 1st, 2008 I witnessed something amazing - the Akita International University matriculation ceremony for new-undergraduate, international, and graduate students. Why was this event so inspiring? The speeches. I heard some of the best speeches I've ever heard in my 33 years of living. The two most outstanding speeches (in my opinion) were given by the Vice-Governor of Akita Prefecture - Fumikazu Sato, and the 2008 Fall Undergraduate Student Representative - Takuma Imamura.
Why were these speeches so inspiring? They were both in English. I was amazed to be perfectly honest. The Vice-Governor gave his whole speech in English. I was totally astonished at how good his English was. His speech was accurate, eloquent, passionate, and inspirational. I think everyone in the room was surprised. For example, the woman in front of me pulled out her Japanese copy of his speech so she could read along, but when the Vice-Governor started speaking in English she had to quickly change her copy of the speech to the English version. I love it when people lead by example.
Takuma-san's speech was well thought out, organized, and executed. Everything from vocabulary to intonation to body language told me he is poised for great things. This "kid" was as sharp as a samurai's katana, and left the room gasping for air. He had the youthful energy that young leaders should have. He challenged his family, himself, his fellow students, and AIU to live up to the standard he set by his amazing speech.
These speeches did exactly what great speeches are supposed to do - leave you inspired and excited to do something. I'm sure everyone at the ceremony was encouraged and motivated to do something - I know I was.
So, I know what you are asking, "Wayne-sensei, I wasn't at this event so I have no idea what they said...How does this help me learn English?" Well, I wish I could re-print those speeches, or give you a video link, but I can't. Sorry. But I will say this - speeches are great for learning English because quite often they are grammatically accurate and have a high level of vocabulary. Believe it or not we actually use those fancy speech words in general conversation as well. Listening to speeches can also help improve your listening ability. The best way is to listen to them at natural speed so you can get a real sense of pace, intonation, and all the other speech techniques that make up natural English.
As far as resources go, I recommend going to iTunes and scanning through podcasts. There's some good stuff on iTunes. You can also find tons of speeches on the internet just by googling "great speeches." YouTube is also a great resource for finding live speeches. Type in "I have a dream speech" and you'll get listings of one of the best speeches in history.

先週の土曜日、NEWS de English（ニュースでイングリッシュ）を開催し、９名もの方が参加してくれました。ありがとうございます。中には７０代くらいの男性もいらして、積極的に質問やコメントをしてくれました。参加者の皆さんに刺激をもらい、また次回への原動力となります。
来月は、１０月１２日にニュースでイングリッシュを開催します。テーマは「風刺漫画で見る政治」です。風刺漫画の奥にあるメッセージを、一緒にひも解いてみませんか？私自身もとても楽しみです♪

"Where Do You Study? - Your environment is important"
Hello everyone! Another week has gone by and still the hot and humid weather continues. Looks like this September might be a hot one.
This week I want to discuss a very important part of studying - your environment. In English we have a phrase, "You are the product of your environment." Basically it means that if the place around you is bad then you will be a bad person, and vice versa, if the place around you is good then you will be a good person. Let's use this kind of thinking when talking about English language study.
Distractions can happen anywhere, but why be in a place where you know there will be a distraction? For example, you want to study for a test, and you think that studying at home will be the best solution - you don't have to waste time traveling to the library; you don't have to spend money and go to a school; you can make your own schedule; no parking fees; etc. These are great reasons to study at home, but what about when the phone rings, what do you do? You answer it. DISTRACTION. Before you sit down to study you decide to put some laundry into the washing machine; what happens when it stops? You stop studying in order to take the laundry out of the machine. You hang it up to dry. DISTRACTION. Your husband or wife comes home when you don't expect it and starts talking to you. It's nice to see them but they are a DISTRACTION.
Now, everyone is different, and you must do what is best for you, but there is a reason a lot of people go to the library - there are NO DISTRACTIONS. Everyone has to be quiet. Silence helps you concentrate on what you have to do. If you are at home and listening to music, watching TV, cooking, doing housework, or listening to the washing machine run, you are not giving your full attention to your studies.
I highly recommend using your local library, community center, or if you have to work, use your work place. Go to work a little early, or use your lunchtime, or stay a little later in order to get some studying done. Please talk with your supervisor to make sure you can do this.
Lastly, when choosing your environment also choose a time when you know no one will be trying to contact you. Ringing phones are a DISTRACTION. I suggest a study time of one to two hours. If you are taking an English language course you probably have homework and this time schedule should be long enough to get something out of your study.
So remember, "you are a product of your environment." Find that really good place to study, and you will get good results. Gambatte!!!

今日は１０月からの新講座をご紹介します！旅行好きだけど英語には自信がない、そんなあなたにぴったりの講座です。
「トラベル英会話」（初級の方対象）を開講します！！！
毎週水曜日の１９：００〜２０：００、遊学舎で海外旅行気分を味わってみませんか？全６回の講座で、海外旅行で必要なフレーズを学び練習することができます。講師はウェイン先生。
１０月１日（水）１９：００〜２０：００が初回で、以降６週間（同じ時間）にわたり受講するコースです。会場は赤十字病院となり遊学舎の研修室１で、受講料は１万円（教材代・税込み）の予定です。
初日のレッスンは、遊学舎主催のNPOまつりの一環として開催しますので、この日だけの参加もできます。その際の参加料は１０００円。まずはこの日にレッスンを受けてみて、それから残りの５回を受講するかを決めることも出来るので安心です。
旅行好きな行動派の方が参加されると思いますので、いろんな方と出会う機会にもなると思います。「トラベル英会話」みなさんのご参加をお待ちしています！！！

"English For Special Purposes"
Hello everyone! Last week it seemed as if summer was about to end, but this week the hot and humid weather made a comeback. Maybe we can still go to the beach for a couple of weeks.
This week I want to talk about what many English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) professionals call 'English for Special Purposes' (ESP). This is different from English for General Conversation (EGC). ESP involves focusing your studies on
something specific, for example - engineering, nursing, accounting, bird watching, etc. So if you are a music teacher and want to improve your knowledge of music English, you should create a study program that focuses on music.
"How do I do this, Wayne-sensei? My English school only offers general conversation classes." Great question.
I think smaller-individual schools run by private teachers can do a great job at creating classes that can help you study for a specific
purpose (bigger schools can also do a great job at this). Sometimes these schools will go to businesses to teach ESP style classes, an example being how I, once a week, visit a local company in Katagami City in order to teach them English. Quite often these people are so
busy they don't have time to go to a school. If the teacher comes to them they will be more motivated to attend an English class. And if they are learning something that directly relates to their jobs, it is
motivating as well.
If you are an independent learner, you can try these suggestions from the Internet. Here is a good example - if you work for a hotel and need 'Hotel English' you can go to this website to get lessons for -
'Hotel English'

This particular website came from another website that had many kinds of English for Special Purposes topics -

In the end, ESP is something that can help you study a specific topic, if that is your English language priority. I will say that a teacher can help you make a good program and answer difficult questions, but if you are an independent study person, the Internet is your best
resource for English For Special Purposes study material.

私事ですが、来週よりまた国際教養大学に戻ることになりました。新規開学の同専門職大学院で、コミュニケーションと学び直しについて学ぼうと思っています（またまた一期生を経験できるのは本当に幸せです）。学力テストの結果や、幼児の英語教育などがもてはやされていますが、まずは大人が変わらなければ、そう思います。いつからだって学び直すことができる。大人になってからの学習は、eye opening なことの連続です。そんなことを伝えていける「BACK TO THE SCHOOL」でありたいなと思います。

私事ですが、来週よりまた国際教養大学に戻ることになりました。新規開学の同専門職大学院で、コミュニケーションと学び直しについて学ぼうと思っています（またまた一期生を経験できるのは本当に幸せです）。学力テストの結果や、幼児の英語教育などがもてはやされていますが、まずは大人が変わらなければ、そう思います。いつからだって学び直すことができる。大人になってからの学習は、eye opening なことの連続です。そんなことを伝えていける「BACK TO THE SCHOOL」でありたいなと思います。

"The Most Important Part About Studying Language"
This issue I won't talk about grammar, conversations, or games. I want to talk about the most important part about studying a language (or anything for that matter) - the individual.
For most of us, learning a foreign language can be difficult, take a lot of time, and sometimes seem useless. This is why I say the most important part about studying is having the personal motivation - WILL - to do so. It starts with US. Parents can't make us study. Friends
can't do our homework. Teachers can't force us to go to class. We have to do it.
There are of course ways to help one stay focused towards studying. I'll briefly talk about two ways - language courses and goal setting. First, enrolling in a regularly scheduled language class gives us a definite place where we know we will be studying that language. When we enter the class we know we won't be studying math, geography, or science - we'll be studying the language of our choice. This will hopefully motivate us to study, as we will most likely need to prepare for the class in order to get the greatest benefit out of the lesson. We don't want to waste our money and time, nor that of that of the teacher and other students (if the class is a group class).
Second, setting long-term and short-term goals can also help us focus on studying. Registering for a proficiency test like TOEIC, EIKEN, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. is a perfect example. I am setting a personal goal to become Level 1 in Japanese by 2011-2012, as certified by the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. In order to accomplish this
long-term goal I've set shorter goals that require me to pass the Level 4 test this year, the Level 3 test next year, the Level 2 test in 2010, and finally the Level 1 test in 2011. By achieving my short-term goals I will keep myself motivated towards my long-term goal. Goal setting is always a great way to maintain your motivation.
Being on a schedule and setting goals are great ways of staying motivated, but ultimately the buck stops with the individual. We have to really want to succeed otherwise we will find excuses not to study, and make excuses when our goals are not fulfilled. I have been living in Japan for 6 years, and I have made all the excuses not to learn Japanese. The only one that matters is that I didn't want to really learn it bad enough. So, it's time to stop making excuses. I'm going BACK TO THE SCHOOL. I have my study schedule. I've set my short and long term goals. Most of all, I have the will. I'm saying I CAN DO IT! So can you!!

ほとんどの人は、外国語を勉強するのは難しいし、時間もかかると思ったり、そして時には無意味だと感じることもあるかもしれません。だからこそ学習する上で一番大事なのは、その人自身のやる気、「やりたいという思い」だと言いたいのです。すべては自分自身から始まるのです。お父さんお母さんは子どもに勉強させることはできません。友だちだって宿題をやってくれるわけではありません。先生ですら無理矢理教室に引っ張ることなんてできません。自分自身がやらなきゃいけないのです。
学習に対するやる気を継続するのに役立つ方法はもちろんあります！簡単に二つご紹介したいと思います。それは、語学レッスンと目標設定。まず語学レッスンについて。定期的に開講されている語学レッスンを受けることは、英語（またはその他の言語）を勉強するための決まった場所と時間を確保することができるという利点があります。その教室では、数学も地理も科学も勉強しないことは明白。私が選んだ言語を勉強するのだと認識することができます。多くの場合、レッスンを受ける前に予習する必要があります。せっかく受講しているのだから、それを最大限活用するには、という具合にやる気が出てきます。誰だって投資したお金と時間を無駄にはしたくないものです。それは指導する先生も他の生徒さん（グループレッスンの場合）も同じことなのです。
二つ目の、長期そして短期の目標を設定することも、学習へのやる気を継続するのに役立ちます。TOEIC、英検、IELTS、TOEFLなどの語学能力検定を受験することは、その一つの例です。私自身も、２０１１〜２０１２年までに日本語能力試験（財団法人日本国際教育支援協会運営）で一級を取得するという目標を設定しています。この長期目標を達成するために、今年中に４級に合格すること、さらに来年は３級、そして２０１０年に２級、最終的に２０１１年に１級を取得するという具合に、いくつかの短期目標を設定し自分にそれを課すのです。短期目標を達成することによって、長期目標に対するモチベーションを維持することができます。目標を設定することは、いつでもあなたのやる気を持ち続けるための方法となります。
決まったスケジュールを持つことと、目標を設定することは、モチベーションを持ち続けるための有効な方法となりますが、結局はあなた自身が決断しなくてはいけないのです。あなた自身が本気で成功したい、達成したいと思わない限り、勉強しない理由ばかりを見つけてしまい、そして目標が達成しなかったときにそう言い訳するのです。私は日本に６年住んでいます、そしてその間日本語を勉強しない（できない）言い訳ばかりしてきました。その一番の理由は、本気で勉強したいという気持ちがなかったからです。だから、今こそ日本語を勉強しない言い訳するのを辞めるときなのです。学校時代のように（BACK TO THE SCHOOL）。学習スケジュールを作りました。長期・短期の目標も設定しました。何より、「やりたい」という本気の思いを持っています。そして、「やればできる」（I Can Do It!）と自分に言い聞かせています。そして、あなただって！！

TOEICを運営している「国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協会」が発行、日本国内外で活躍するグローバルな人材を紹介する情報誌です。前号までは無料で提供される「紙」の雑誌でしたが、今号から完全オンラインで、メンバーはPDFを無料でダウンロードできるという仕組みに変りました。

"Fabulous Festival Conversation - The Easy Version"
Hello loyal readers. I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer! Enjoy all the festivals and soak up all the great weather!! So, last week I promised I would "show you a much more simple way to have the same conversation," and "talk about a different festival." Everyone loves fireworks (or at least everyone that I know). This week we are going to read a conversation about the Omagari Fireworks Festival (Saturday, August 23rd, 2008). Just like last week there will be a "Japanese Person" (JP) and a "Foreigner" (F). And for this situation let's imagine a local train going to Omagari from Akita. There are many many many people on the train - it's really packed.
Here we go:
F: Excuse me.
JP: Yes.
F: Do you speak English?
JP: Yes, a little. How may I help you?
F: Where is everyone going?
JP: To the Omagari Fireworks Festival.
F: Is it a big festival?
JP: Yes.
F: How many people usually go?
JP: I think six hundred thousand (600,000).
F: WOW! Is Omagari a big place?
JP: No, not really.
F: How many people live in Omagari?
JP: Maybe sixty thousand (60,000).
F: How many times have you been to this festival?
JP: Many many times since I was a child.
F: Oh, really. Where are you from?
JP: I'm from Akita City. How about you, where are you from?
F: I'm from the United States of America. Oh, by the way, my name is Wayne. What is your name?
JP: My name is Eiko. Nice to meet you.
F: Nice to meet you too.
JP: Are you going to the fireworks?
F: I don't think so.
JP: You should go.
F: Are the fireworks good?
JP: Yes, highly recommend you go. You will not be disappointed - it's the national competition.
F: Okay, I will go.
JP: Oh, here is my stop.
F: Oh, are you going to the fireworks?
JP: Yes, but I have to meet some friends.
F: Where do I get off?
JP: At Omagari. Just follow the people.
F: Thank you very much.
JP: You're welcome. Have a good time. See you.
F: Bye.
Don't let the length of this conversation fool you. It can go by very quickly, and notice much of the language is language you might be studying if you are beginning your English language study. This is basically a question and answer conversation. Also, notice how the conversation is started…Wayne (the Foreigner) uses the crowded train to start the conversation with Eiko (the Japanese Person). This is a very common way to start a conversation with a stranger. They continue with basic introduction language, and that extends into talking specifically about something Eiko knows about, the Omagari Fireworks Festival. The conversation never goes into something she cannot comfortably talk about. If you know the conversation subject matter you will be more comfortable thus making the conversation easier to understand and participate in.
One thing I want to say, if at any time the Foreigner is speaking too quickly, or you cannot understand the person, ask them to repeat themselves. For example, say:
"I'm sorry, could you say that again."
OR
"I'm afraid I couldn't catch that last thing you said."
OR
"Could you say that again, a bit more slowly?"
These are just suggestions. If you have language you want to use please do so. The main goal is to stay calm and make sure the Foreigner repeats themselves in a way you can understand. Also, this conversation does not show you every situation. You might talk with a foreigner and find the conversation to be very different. The main thing to do in this situation is just stay calm, and believe-in-yourself - Remember - YOU CAN DO IT!!!

F: I'm from the United States of America. Oh, by the way, my name is Wayne. What is your name?
JP: My name is Eiko. Nice to meet you.
F: Nice to meet you too.
JP: Are you going to the fireworks?
F: I don't think so.
JP: You should go.
F: Are the fireworks good?
JP: Yes, highly recommend you go. You will not be disappointed - it's the national competition.
F: Okay, I will go.
JP: Oh, here is my stop.
F: Oh, are you going to the fireworks?
JP: Yes, but I have to meet some friends.
F: Where do I get off?
JP: At Omagari. Just follow the people.
F: Thank you very much.
JP: You're welcome. Have a good time. See you.
F: Bye.
Don't let the length of this conversation fool you. It can go by very quickly, and notice much of the language is language you might be studying if you are beginning your English language study. This is basically a question and answer conversation. Also, notice how the conversation is started…Wayne (the Foreigner) uses the crowded train to start the conversation with Eiko (the Japanese Person). This is a very common way to start a conversation with a stranger. They continue with basic introduction language, and that extends into talking specifically about something Eiko knows about, the Omagari Fireworks Festival. The conversation never goes into something she cannot comfortably talk about. If you know the conversation subject matter you will be more comfortable thus making the conversation easier to understand and participate in.
One thing I want to say, if at any time the Foreigner is speaking too quickly, or you cannot understand the person, ask them to repeat themselves. For example, say:
"I'm sorry, could you say that again."
OR
"I'm afraid I couldn't catch that last thing you said."
OR
"Could you say that again, a bit more slowly?"
These are just suggestions. If you have language you want to use please do so. The main goal is to stay calm and make sure the Foreigner repeats themselves in a way you can understand. Also, this conversation does not show you every situation. You might talk with a foreigner and find the conversation to be very different. The main thing to do in this situation is just stay calm, and believe-in-yourself - Remember - YOU CAN DO IT!!!

やっと「本当の梅雨明け」を迎え、青空がきらきらまぶしい夏日が続いていますね。夏祭り、お盆行事、オリンピックも始まり、いろんな意味で忙しい夏休みになりそうです。
英語指導のカリスマ、安河内哲也さんの「どうやったら学習意欲が長続きするの」５つのコツ、今日が最終日です！

今日は、是非最後に紹介したいなと思っていた「恥を捨てろ！」についてお話ししたいと思います。
よく、英語のレッスンや英会話には興味はあるけれど、「私全然話せないから」と躊躇される方がいます。でも、話せるようになるためにスクールに行ったり講座を受講するのだと思いませんか？
「ペラペラじゃないと恥ずかしい」とか「間違ったらみっともない」とか、人の目を気にして臆病になっていると、いつまでたっても話せるようになりません。恥ずかしいけれど、勇気を出して始める人が、「話せるようになりたい」という目標を叶えることができるのだと思います。
安河内さんは、２０年以上も英語を勉強していてもネイティブのようには話せないとも言っています。そして、間違うことだってあります。
私たちの母語である日本語ですら、ときどき言った後に間違っていたと気づくことがありますよね。例えば「よろしくです」とか。日本語自体はちょっとおかしいけれど、でもちゃんと通じます。そこが大事。英語も同じで、伝わればいいのです。「英語の恥はかき捨て」。間違うことを恐れず、機会があればどんどん話し、間違ったらそこから学ぶという姿勢で英語学習ができる人って、かっこいいですよね。それを続けていれば、いつかは間違う確立もだいぶ低くなってくると思います。
私個人的には、この「恥を捨てろ！」が、５つのコツの中で一番大事だと思います。何事も、持って生まれた才能や環境が自分を形造るのではなく、やりたい！やるんだ！という「心構え」が運命をも変えるのではないかな。そう信じて、今でも学習を続けています。一緒に頑張りませんか？

"Fabulous Festival Conversation"
With festivals happening all over Japan let's practice having a conversation about festivals.
Imagine you're at your local festival and you see a foreigner. You don't know them, and have never seen them before. Take a chance and talk with them. You've been studying your English so now is the time to practice it, and maybe even make a new friend doing so. Since I live in Aktia City I will use the Kanto Festival for this sample conversation. Depending on where you live and the festival involved you will have to change some of this model conversation. I recommend reading this out loud.
Here we go:
Japanese Person (JP): Excuse me…
Foreigner (F): Yeah.
JP: Sorry to disturb you…
F: No worries.
JP: Is this your first time seeing Kanto?
F: Yep…first time. I just got here this year. How about you?
JP: Oh no. I see Kanto every year. I live here. What about you? Do you live here?
F: Yeah, I just got here, so this is my first time seeing Kanto.
JP: What do you think of Kanto so far?
F: Amazing really!
JP: That's great!
F: Yeah, amazing. Can't believe they can hold those poles for so long…are they heavy?
JP: I think so…Maybe twenty to forty-five kilos. Maybe more.
F: REALLY!
JP: Yeah, that's pretty heavy I guess.
F: Have you ever done that?
JP: Noooo, not like them.
F: Whaddaya mean, "not like them."
JP: Well…After the last session of the night they will let you try holding a kanto. That's what I did.
F: REALLY!!
JP: Yeah, you can hold a small one. You can get your picture taken while holding it.
F: That's just downright cool! I wanna do that…what time is that?
JP: Ohhhh…about eight-forty (2040) or so. You can even play the taiko if you like and there is time.
F: What's a taiko?
JP: A taiko is a traditional Japanese drum. It's very loud. You can see the performers playing them, along with a traditional Japanese flute.
F: That sounds really cool! Hey, by the way, what's your name? We've been talking for so long and I don't even know your name.
JP: Oh, my name is Hiroshi. Nice to meet you. What's yours?
F: Wayne. Nice to meet you to. Thanks for the information.
From here you can continue the conversation as naturally as possible.
This may look quite advanced but don't worry. Next week I will show you a much more simple way to have the same conversation. I will talk about a different festival next week. But for now practice this one.
And remember - If your book study is boring, and you are feeling de-motivated - Stop. Take a breath. Go to your local festival. Find a foreigner. Say, "I CAN DO IT!" and talk with them.

今日は、是非最後に紹介したいなと思っていた「恥を捨てろ！」についてお話ししたいと思います。

もう４回目になりました。今日のテーマは、「楽しく、薄い教材を選べ！」です。
本屋さんの英語学習コーナーに行くと、それはそれはたくさんの教材が溢れています。テーマ毎に分かれているので見やすいと言えばそうなのですが、どれを選べばいいか悩みますよね。
流行の教材、東大の学生生協で売り上ナンバー１、スコア１００点アップ！などなど、私たちを誘惑するコピーに目がくらみ、手に取るのは「厚い」テキストばかりではないでしょうか？
安河内さん曰く、「問題集は５割以上できるものを選ぶ」のだそうです。そして「ハイレベルなものではなく、楽しみながら少しずステップアップしていけるもの」がいいそうです。そうでないと、途中でうんざりしてくるのだそう。
薄い教材を選ぶ一番の利点は、短期間でその一冊を終えることができ、「達成感」を得ることができるということ。これは本当に励みになります。きっと皆さんも、学生時代、職場で、大きな課題やプロジェクトを終えた時に感じたことがあるのではないでしょうか。
この最初の一冊を終えることができたのだから、次はもう少しレベルアップしたものに挑戦してみよう。きっとまた達成できるはず！そう思えるようになればしめたもの。
というわけで、いくらでも薄い教材を選ぶよう心がけてみましょう。大は小を兼ねますが、小をたくさん積み重ねていく方が、継続学習では効果的かもしれません。

"Activities for the 'Friends' Script and Video"
Last week I talked about using the U.S. TV show "Friends," and the show script, as tools to study English. I gave you a link...

to the scripts so you can download them whenever you want. In the same article I also mentioned games and activities you could do to enhance your learning experience. That's our subject for today. This is a long one. Good challenge. Let's get right to it:
1) "Shadowing"
This is very basic. When the characters are speaking you are speaking with them. At first watch I recommend using the script and reading along with the actors. If you study with a group of friends everyone can participate. Each person can imagine they are one of the characters and read along. Remember to read out load. I also recommend doing this in short bits of 5 minutes or so. A normal episode of "Friends" is no more than 30 minutes so this should not take very long. Once you understand and are able to speak along with the episode, move on to another episode. Go at your own pace, and have fun. This activity is designed to improve your listening and reading skills, as you have to use them both at the same time.
2) "Dictation"
Another basic activity - you look, listen, and write. There is a lot of dialogue in one episode of "Friends" so break up the show into 5 minute bits (of course you can make the time shorter or longer depending on your English level). Set a timer and once your time is up check the script to see what you missed, or didn't miss. I recommend reading the script before watching the episode in order to get a feel and idea of the vocabulary - meanings, spellings, pronunciations, etc.
3) "What's the Friend Wearing?"
This activity can be adjusted to build either basic clothes vocabulary, or to increase already learned vocabulary and language. Here's what you do - watch the video and describe the outfit of each actor or actress you see. To make it more difficult give yourself a time limit. This can be a great group activity. Each member can be responsible for describing a certain character. The group members can discuss whether the description is accurate or not. This allows for group members to help each other improve vocabulary.
4) "What's the Friend Going to Wear?"
A different way of playing activity #3, this allows you to use future tenses and prediction/speculation language. You can make simple sentences - "I think Monica is going to wear a white cotton blouse." Or, you can make longer more difficult sentences - "I really believe Rachel is going to wear a sexy black evening dress. Nothing too
racy, but definitely not anything too conservative and bland." Depending on your vocabulary level you can do whatever "tickles your fancy" ("what you feel like doing").
5) "Discussion"
Of course you can also have a simple (or difficult) discussion. This naturally favors groups. You can practice asking - starting, follow-up, clarifying, open, closed, and tag questions. You can also practice debating by using agreeing and disagreeing language, as well as interrupting skills. You can talk about societal issues that are very serious, or just have a simple light-hearted talk about the show. The choice is always yours.
6) "Your choice"
If the above activities do not look fun, make up your own. And if it is really something that helps you, or your group, share them with us. Send your "Friends" study ideas to wam@backtotheschool.info, and I will put them on our blog and/or website. This will allow anyone studying English with "Friends" to have a plethora of ideas at their fingertips. I will not put your names next to the ideas unless there are instructions to do so.

今日も、英語指導のカリスマ、安河内哲也さんの「どうやったら学習意欲が長続きするの」５つのコツの続きです。もう一度おさらい。

３回目の今日は、「ムリな計画は立てるな！」に注目してみます。
前にもダイエットの例を挙げましたが、「一週間で５kg痩せよう」という無理な計画を立てても、なかなか実現しません。不可能ではないけれど、体の負担も大きいし、リバウンドする可能性だってあります。
英語の学習も同じ。短期間で英語を習得したい、例えば一日５時間勉強して一ヶ月でペラペラに・・・って、なりません！少しでもいいので、できれば毎日続けることが、長い目で見ると「自分の目標」を達成する一番の近道なのでは、と思います。
安河内さんは、「一日３０秒」を続けなさいと言っています。３０秒なら、どんなに忙しい人でも毎日できそうですね！３０秒とりあえずやってみて、続けられそうなら１０分、調子が良ければ１時間と、その日の気分で決めていい。大事なのは「毎日続ける」こと。
厳しいノルマを課すことでやる気が出る人もいるでしょう。その場合は、ご自身の今までのやり方で学習を続けて下さい。もし「私はいつも三日坊主で」という方がいらしたら、気楽に「３０秒」を始めてみてください。それが習慣になるといいですね♪

"An Evening with 'Friends'"
Welcome FRIENDS. Today I want to follow-up on last week's issue about movies. Instead of movies though we are going to talk about television shows. Last week I talked about how to use movies to help improve your English language skills. One downside to that was the time involved. Your average theater-style movie is 2 hours or so. I suggested watching a movie a total of 8 to 12 times, which would be 16 to 24 hours in front of the TV screen.
Here is another idea, but involves using the U.S. American TV show "Friends." I first came upon this language tool when I was working for the now extinct English conversation school (eikaiwa) NOVA. One of the students brought in a copy of a "Friends" script and wanted to go over it in class. I was more than happy to do so. Eventually other students heard about it and asked, "Wayne do you think it can help my English?" I answered, "Yes." Even though I was not the biggest fan of the show, I would say with great confidence, "If you want another way to learn conversational English complete with idioms and innuendo, 'Friends' is a good show to watch." Of course "Friends" is a comedy, so the idea is to make you laugh, but much of the actual language is very normal, and useful for everyday conversational English.
I recommend downloading a script first and reading it. It will look strange, but remember that what you are reading is a conversation between people. You can see the words and phrases being used, and look them up to gain full understanding. If you study English with a group of people you can read the script, with each member of the group being one of the characters from the TV show. After your group's performance watch the specific episode that relates to the script. Watching the video will allow you to connect body language with the words on the paper.
There are all sorts of games and activities you can do with the scripts and videos. In the next issue I will talk about these games and activities. But for now download a script - here is a website that has good-complete scripts -

- rent the videos that relate to your script (you can rent DVD sets from your local video store), and enjoy learning English.
And remember - If your book study is difficult, and you are feeling de-motivated - Stop. Take a breath. Download a script, get with some "Friends" and say, "I CAN DO IT!"

今日は一つ目、「長期的で楽しい目標を立てろ！」に注目していきます。
皆さんも経験があると思いますが、長く続けなければ効果のないもの、例えばダイエットとか筋トレとか黒酢とか、最初は目新しくやる気満々で始めるのですが、時間がたつにつれ情熱が弱まってくるものです。
勉強、語学もまったくそのとおり。数ヶ月で上達が目に見えるというものではなく、こつこつと長く続けていかなければいけません。
もし日々の学習が難しすぎたり、つまらなかったりすると、長続きしないのは当然。だったら、それを楽しいものに変えてしまったらいいのかも！
安河内さんが英語を勉強し始めた理由は、映画が好きだからハリウッド映画の台詞をわかるようになりたい、というものだったそうです。その目標を持つことによって、映画を観るという行為が、娯楽から学習に変ってしまいました！でも、気分は娯楽のまま。安河内さんはそうやって自分を自ら楽しませて学習を続けてきたのですね。
私自身も、実は「字幕翻訳家になりたい」という想いから、英語の学習を本気で始めました。そんな「無謀な」目標を持っただけで、日々の学習がとっても楽しくなり、学習が辛くならなくなりました。なんでも目標というものを持ってみるものですね。
今でもその目標を目指しているか、と言われればそうでもないのですが、5年前に「字幕翻訳家になりたい」という目標を持ったおかげで、世界が広がりました。今は技術英語や国際ビジネスに関わる翻訳していますが、とっても興味深いですよ。この分野をもう少し極めてみたいです。
皆さんの目標はなんですか？是非教えて下さい♪誰かに宣言することによって、きっとその目標が叶うと思います。ウェイン先生に、「英語で」伝えてもいいかもしれませんね。勇気を出して言ってみよう！"I Can Do It!"

"The Magic of Movies and English"
On many occasions students have told me they are learning English because they want to watch English language movies, so today I will talk about how to use movies to improve your English language skills.
The most important part of this whole study effort is choosing a movie you know you will like and can watch many times. It can be any genre - horror, action, romance, comedy, etc., just as long as you know you will like it and won't get bored watching it.
O.K., now that you have chosen your movie here's how you use it:
1) Watch the whole movie with Japanese subtitles so you can understand the main story and what is happening. Do this 2 to 3 times. After 3 times you should be able to understand the movie.
2) Now watch the movie with English subtitles (if that is an option; if not, go to STEP 3). This will allow you to use your listening, and reading skills to understand the movie (keep a vocabulary diary). Do this 3 to 4 times. By the 4th time you should be able to comfortably get through the movie, and understand a lot of the vocabulary.
3) Now you are ready to watch the movie without subtitles and fully in English. You might not understand the words, but you should be able to understand what is happening, etc. Do this step 3 to 5 times.
By the end of all 3 steps you will have probably watched the same movie 8 to 12 times (this is why I said choose a movie you know you will like and not get bored with - you may even need to watch it more).
You might be asking, "Wayne-sensei, this is going to take forever?" That's right, if you watch the whole movie 12 times. If you don't have that kind of time, while watching the movie the first few times with Japanese subtitles, take note of parts you want to go back and
study. Try to choose parts with lots of dialogue, where the actors are talking a lot. You really want to focus your efforts so that you can use your time as wisely as possible.
And remember - If your book study is difficult, and you are feeling de-motivated - Stop. Take a breath. Get a movie you want to watch many many many times and say,
"I CAN DO IT!"

皆さん、安河内哲也さんってご存知ですか？最近書店で彼の書籍（英語学習、TOEIC教材）をよく見かけます。英語界のカリスマのようですね。
その安河内さんが、「英語上達５つのコツ」を紹介した記事を見つけたので、これから５週に渡って紹介していきたいと思います。
「どうやったら学習意欲が長続きするの」というタイトルで、その５つのコツとは・・・
* 長期的で楽しい目標を立てろ！

今日は、一番最後の「定期的に刺激を作れ！」に注目していきます。
英語をずっと学習し続けていると、そのうちマンネリ化してきて、飽きてくることがあります。安河内さん曰く、「野球やテニスなどのスポーツでも、試合をせずに素振りや壁打ちなどの基礎練習だけしていたら、飽きてしまいますよね。英語学習も同じです。飽きないで続けるためには試合のような刺激が必要なのです。」
具体的にどんな「試合」があるでしょうか。例えば、海外旅行・
TOEIC受験・近所の外国人に話しかけてみる、などなど。英語を使わなくてはいけない状態を、自ら作り出してしまえばいいのです。
でも、海外旅行に毎月行くわけにもいきませんからね。一番気軽なものが、「外国人と話す」機会を定期的に持つことでしょう。国際交流パーティーに参加するとか、あと、私の生徒さんで「日本のユースホステルに泊まる」という方がいますが、それは刺激になりとてもいいことだと思います。もちろん、英会話スクールに行くのも手ですね。普段から学習を続けているのであれば、その機会はそれほど多くなくてもいいです。一ヶ月に１〜２回で十分。その代わり、その機会を精一杯使う努力をすると、効果が全然違います。
NEWS de Englishに参加するのもよいかもしれませんね♪大事なのは、刺激を受け楽しむこと。さて、その刺激に向けて、今日もまた素振りをしましょうか！

"Fun Ways To Fill In The Blanks"
Hello everyone! Hope Summer is treating you well. It has been very hot and humid in Akita City recently, but festival season is right around the corner. Time to get ready for Kanto!!
Today I want to talk about having fun while learning new vocabulary and parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.). Sometimes when we are studying from our textbooks we have exercises where a word or two in a sentence or paragraph is missing. It's our job to put the "correct" word in the blank spot. I've done this while studying Japanese, and while effective, sometimes it can be very boring. Here's a way to make things more interesting.
Go to http://www.eduplace.com/tales/, and you will find "Wacky Web Tales." I know what you are asking, "What are 'Wacky Web Tales,' and how can they help me learn vocabulary and parts of speech?"
Well, first choose a category from the list on the screen. Then you follow the directions - "fill in the blanks." You might see "large number" next to the blank space you type in a large number for example, 159,857. Or you might see "plural noun" so you type in for example, "apples." The site has a "Parts of Speech Help" section at http://www.eduplace.com/tales/help.html, or you can click on the button at the bottom of the "Wacky Web Tales" homepage that says, "Parts of Speech Help." Once you finish filling in all the blanks hit the button marked "See Your Wacky Web Tale," and read your masterpiece.
This is great for lower levels because there is no pressure to make as serious story. Remember these are "WACKY Web Tales" ("WACKY" meaning strange, but very funny). Concentrate on the part of speech to be used. You can use whatever vocabulary you have. Over time this will improve ability to understand what nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. are; what they look like in a sentence; and how certain words are used.
Intermediate levels can create a challenge by making a time limit to fill in each blank. This should help improve parts of speech and vocabulary recognition and comprehension.
A great activity for advanced levels is taking certain words out of already written news stories, etc. You can try to complete the news story with the real word, or you can make a funny news story by adding your own word (just remember to use the correct part of speech).
When I was a kid this is how I learned vocabulary and parts of speech. I also had lots of fun with my friends. I hope you gain the same educational value from these tales, while having fun with your friends.
And remember If it looks difficult, and you are feeling de-motivated Stop. Take a breath. Think. Do a "Wacky Web Tale." Laugh, and say, "I CAN DO IT!"
