こんにちは!秋田ではしくしくと雨が降り続いていますが、ごきげんいかがですか?
「I Can Do It!」では、毎週金曜日(時々不定期)にメールマガジンを発行しています。「I Can Do It!」

"Continue Your Life with Education"
Hello friends. Sorry for last week, and the late mailmag this week. We have been in the process of moving to a new place. Our internet is down and boxes still LINE our new place. We are SLOWLY BUT SURELY digging ourselves out from underneath all the stuff we have, and soon will back up and running, normally. BEAR WITH US.
Last time I gave you a little PEAK inside the weekly Monday roundtable discussion I FACILITATE. We had the week off for Golden Week (which really was golden, wasn't it?) so this week no real peak inside, but instead I will talk about the very thing that brought us all together - continuing education/lifelong learning.
I know I have talked about this before but I feel it is something that is worth repeating, especially in this day and age. Because of this global recession people are RETOOLING their skills in order to either keep their jobs, or get new ones. The time where it was okay to just get a job and rely on one kind of education - experience - to get you through is over. Employers are becoming more and more SELECTIVE with regards to who they hire, and who they keep. The employee who shows drive and initiative to do the best job possible will most likely keep his/her job, and in many cases get the ones that need FILLING. Doing that job entails always wanting to learn new things and ACQUIRE new skills.
I for example, am doing an online doctor of education degree course that will eventually give me the skills and qualification to be a FULL-FLEDGED university professor who can write CURRICULUM and teach how to IMPLEMENT it. This degree will also give me the flexibity to work wherever I want, and the financial stability that comes with such a degree is rather nice to. My wife is gaining her masters degree because she knows that by continuing her education it will allow her to be a better and more effective translator and interpreter. The flexibility and financial security are also huge pluses. Even my mother-in-law is continuing her education, after many years of being away from the classroom.
If you are an engineer taking a class that teaches you the latest UPGRADED technologies in your FIELD, it will allow you to do more for your company. You will become more valuable. If you are a health care worker, getting education on the latest medicines and medical practices IS A MUST. Peoples' lives depend on it. If you are a teacher, I believe you OWE IT to your students to make sure your teaching license is a qualification that is never OUTDATED. You need to always study, and be tested, how to be a better teacher. Hopefully you SEE MY POINT.
The professional reasons/benefits for continuing your education are obvious. But the people who come to my roundtable every week, I feel, are there for more than professional reasons. They are fulfilling a lifestyle choice. Speaking English makes them happy and gives their lives extra meaning. Not to mention it keeps their minds sharp. (I have to say, it also keeps my mind sharp, and makes me happy.) These are also reasons for continuing education; and they are reasons that are just as important as the professional ones I listed above.
Lifelong learning is something that I never really actively thought about until my wife mentioned she wanted to GET INTO IT. After that I realized that I was surrounded by it all my young life. My mother and father never really stopped going to school. As parents raising three kids they took COMMUNITY COLLEGE courses, nursing courses, computer courses, etc. They were, and still are, always learning.
So, my friends, whether it be English, or another language, music, painting, medicine, law, computer science...whatever! Please never forget the value of education and lifelong learning. It doesn't have to be just a professional thing; it should also be a personal thing.
We'll be back next week with a continued peak into the "The Weekly Nikkei Round Table". It meets every Monday, except holidays, when we meet on Tuesday, from 2000 to 2100. If you have been to a News de English and enjoyed it, then this Monday session is RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY. Come on down to the Yugakusha and join the Round Table - we want your opinion!
If you want to join us, email us at wam@backtotheschool.info, or eicolm@backtotheschool.info.
This month we have our News de English where we'll be looking at the Global Economic Recession and what people from other countries are saying about it. Is it as bad as some people say, or worse???? Sunday, May 24th from 1030 to 1200 at the Yugakusha. Join us for some lively discussion.
As always, thank you for the continued support, and your comments and suggestions are always welcome.
Peace
