UBI Research puplish 2012 OLED lighting industry annual report
As Active-Matrix Organic Light-emitting Diode (AMOLED) has begun to be used in earnest in the mobile communications industry, the OLCD lighting market is expected to enter a new development phase in 2012 mainly driven by Korea. OLED lighting is the next generation of lighting materials as a form of a area light source, emitting light closest to natural light in the visible light area.
There are several companies around the world that produce OLED lightings such as Osram, Philips, and Astron FIAMM in Europe and Lumiotec, Kaneka, and Tohuku Piorneer in Japan. In Korea, LG Chem. has been producing OLED lightings since November 2011.
The most important feature that the next-generation lighting must achieve is high efficiency of over 60lm/W to compete with fluorescent lamps and LED. Since the efficiency of the OLED lightings produced up until 2011 remains at 40 to 50lm/W, the shipment volume of OLDE lightings was just about 20,000 units in 2011.
UBI SANUP Research, a market research company, and OLEDNET, a media company specialized in OLED, have jointly released “2012 OLED Lighting Annual Report”.
According to the report, in 2012 OLED lightings will remain confined to lighting designers because of their low-efficiency and high-cost. From 2013, however, the industry will be boosted significantly since most of the major OLED lighting companies plan to release high-efficiency products of over 60lm/W and low-cost products of about $100 (for 100mm x 100mm).
In particular, it is expected that leading OLED lighting companies will expand their product lines and Chinese companies will also make massive investments in the OLED lighting industry, which will increase the industry by 500% annually all the way to 2015. And 2015 would see a shipment volume of 25 million units OLED lightings in an expected one-billion-dollar OLED lighting market.
The report includes global trends in the OLED lighting industry, investment trends in the OLED lighting markets and companies, status of OLED lighting development by major companies, and patent information about light-emitting materials for OLED lighting and about light-extracting technology necessary for manufacturing high-efficient OLED lightings.
