Faith Maree Wood, 18, of Christchurch, was a passenger in a van that plunged off West Coast Road, between Cass and Bealey Spur, near Arthur's Pass, about 6am on Saturday, police said.

She was ejected from the van, which rolled down a steep slope and landed on railway lines.

Five other people in the van were taken to Christchurch Hospital, two with critical injuries.

All five were in a stable condition on Sunday, and the two who were critically injured had been moved out of intensive care.

About 5.30pm on Saturday, Tracy Ann Shipston, 39, of Christchurch, died instantly when her car struck a tour bus head-on.

It appeared her car had crossed the centre line into the path of the bus on West Coast Road in Porters Pass near Springfield, police said.

The bus was not carrying passengers.

Investigations into both crashes continue.
